All I'm saying is, save yourself the hassle and extra effort and just toss it. If they find the phone again, they'll just re-brick it.
Chances are, they have already reported it lost/stolen and the carrier has black listed the devices serial anyway, keeping your from connecting it to any service provider.
I know this, because I used to sell iPhones.
