Anybody? I got a job offer at a dealership. I just want to know what its like. How long does it take to get used to? Any insight would be cool...

What dealership?? I worked at a Jeep dealership for over 5 years. I def recommend it if your single. Dealership hours are crazy. Some of my boys have wife and kids and barley get to see them and only have 1 day off. For the first 3 days, learn the vehicles, even when you go home take a couple hours to learn what all the cars have to offer. The manager will most likely link you up with a seasoned sales person to shadow over. I had a blast though, I made good money, the sales crew was awesome, you become really close to them because you almost spend 70 hours a week at the dealership, used to go get drinks after. Saturdays were BRUTAL, you get to the point where your like damn i need to go out. So after a 12 hour shift on friday, leave around 10ish, go out drinking till like 2-3am, wake up at 6am be ready for a 7am sales meeting. Used to walk in that &^%$# like a zombie. But def give it a try, its an awesome experience, you meet ALOT of people, build a good relationship with your customers because you can always reach out to them if you decide for a career change.

You doing car sales? I work for a benz dealer ship, but I work in the parts department, been there for 3 years and previously worked at BMW for 2 years. I like what I do for the most part, the money definitely ain't bad

Whats the pay start at in parts Dept?

That really depends on what city you work and what position in parts you work. I do pretty well for myself, with my salary + monthly bonus ( commission ) since I'm one of the best at what I do at my job...

Break it down starting wit your city, to your department, to the levels if you can.

How does one get his foot in the door in the parts department, and what exactly do you do there :nerd:

Real basic/quick version:

I work in SF so it's already a higher pay than most other cities for starters.

To start off in parts most people become drivers first delivering wholesale deliveries to the different shops around the city. Then you can move up to shipping and receiving. You don't get bonus until you actually start selling parts. So the next step will be selling parts on the front retail counter. That's selling parts to the customers that come in to the store to purchase parts on their own. And then depending on how your store is situated the front retail counter and wholesale counter might be the same thing. In SF we have 2 parts departments, the main one in the dealership and another parts department at another location that does most of the whole sale and Sprinter Van stuff. Selling retail/wholesale counters is cool and money is cool but you don't make the most comission there and you deal with a lot of BS customers and ****. What I do is what we call "backcounter" or internal parts advisor. I sell/bill out the parts on your repair orders when you bring your benz to get fixed for service. That's where the money is at cause you billing out some big services or major stuff under warranty and that goes towards your bonus. And I only deal with my technicians and service writers. Job is pretty relax but it can get really busy at times. Then from there you can go up to assistant manager and they parts manager. I'm only 24 yrs old and only got 5 years under my belt between BMW and Benz doing this. I started 5 years ago working at BMW on the retail counter ( got lucky and leaped frogged over driver and shipping receiving ) was getting paid $12/hour plus bonus. I worked for a few years to get experience under my belt and learn the trade and got good fast. Few years go by and I get an offer from the benz dealer ship few blocks down. Immediate pay upgrade and 1 year goes by and I got the back counter position.

Pay wise, it depends obviously on how much you sell and what % you get from your sales but I can clear $75k a year overall with regularity, don't work weekends either. I heard from some cats who have been doing this for a while that before the recession some years back when people where buying new cars a lot and bringing their cars to the dealer, when it was really booming, they were making close to 100k in my position.. But still, Not bad for a 24 year old with no college degree... assistant manager makes around 100k + and parts manager is making $175-200k. Idk if I wanna do this my whole life, I'll probably go back to school once my wife finishes her masters program in USF. But if I stick around for a couple more years I know I can become assistant manager and then leave to another dealer to become a parts manager. I'm already being groomed for it ( doing manager duties/ paperwork and stuff )

So yea it's not a bad job...

Also service writers can make $$$ easy 100k if you know how to ******** and convince customers they need to buy services and stuff at the dealer without shopping else where ( like independent shops) they get paid off their customer service surveys too so you gotta have top notch CS skills

Real quick on the car sales side.. this one dude at my dealer ship has made $300k a year selling cars. He sells cars like CRAZY! Asians in the Bay Area LOVE Benz and he's Chinese so he gets all the asians that walk in and a ton of referrals. He made 18k in March and told me it was a slow month...

Been thinking about applying to my local Lexus dealership as a sales person.

Thanks guys.

The GM I met said he has two sales teams, offered me the job and asked me to stick around to meet with a sales lead (whos team I'll be on most likely) The sales lead told me "each person on my team makes nothing less than 60K. The cars sell themselves (Kia) "

I have to get a sales license which cost around $150, plus dmv record printout, life-scan, and drug test. I don't even have the money for that right now

I told them yes I'll take it. I have to scrap together the money when my unemployment check comes in next week
