Traveling to another country = automatic expert?

I kinda have the opposite problem...I'm in Mexico for work and since I'm black with locs, everyone either wants to show off their freestyle skills or reggae knowledge for me. It's more funny to me than anything, I get a lot of free drinks and other party favors out of it so I can live with some friendly profiling.

I wouldn't dream of going back to the old country talking about how I'm some expert on Latino culture tho...that just seems obnoxious.

That HAS to get annoying after while.......

I went to Japan one summer and when i left i felt like i knew less about it
In my 3 travels thus far and having family there that are native, I couldn't agree more. Japanese culture and society is the most interesting, intricate thing I have ever been immersed in. And I have studied it for 6 years (language, culture, history, pop culture).

not sure what it is about Japan, but it seems to bring out a particular brand of weirdo, those body pillow waifu types...

those are the only types that ive met that actively claim to be "experts" on Japanese culture, which im sure is not even anywhere remotely close to what Japan is actually like...
They are called weaboos. But ya know I have come to really find it two ways.

1: You get dream crushed when you go and realize you are not handed a waifu and keys to a Gundam right off the plane and you just never recover from the sky high expectations.

or

2: You adapt and realize past the pop culture is an amazing, fascinating society that, like everywhere else, has it's own ups and downs, and isn't just Pocky, anime, and samurai exports.

Speaking of these Muay Thai experts, there's a bar I went to in Thailand where you can hop in the ring and fight other drunk idiots. Saw so many stupid dudes make fools out of themselves and almost die by challenging people that can actually fight (while wearing the Muay Thai shorts they bought off the street)

Lmao

yeah, kinda...like "oh, bless your heart." I understand it comes from a positive place tho.

on a level, I get it...I'm often the first 'black' person people in the area have seen that wasn't on TV, but still, this is the first time I've been to Mexico and not even on day 1 did it ever cross my mind to approach randoms and go "hey, what's the name of your mariachi band?" or "dude, you gotta show me your sombrero collection sometime."
