I just read about this story yesterday. It really breaks my heart. I just can't even imagine the pain the father is going through right now. He told her not to go alone for her run. Hopefully the police get enough leads that they can find the person who did this crime.

It's obviously hard to say what exactly happened here, but I think that this should serve as a wake up call for both men/women who chose to run/walk/etc. as a form of exercise outside. Just try to be aware of your surroundings and think about the routes you choose to take when going out and about.

Anyways, RIP to the young lady...

It was part of Karina Vetrano’s routine to leave her home in Howard Beach, Queens, and go for a run along an expanse of undeveloped wetlands on the northern end of Jamaica Bay. She usually ran with her father, a retired firefighter, who had recently injured his back.

On Tuesday evening, Ms. Vetrano, 30, left by herself, the authorities said, even though her father did not want her to go alone.

She exchanged text messages with a friend along the way, but suddenly stopped, the authorities said. Her father repeatedly called her cellphone, but she did not pick up. Almost two hours went by, and she did not return.

“That’s when he got worried,” Robert K. Boyce, the New York Police Department’s chief of detectives, said of her father, Philip Vetrano.

Mr. Vetrano reached a neighbor who is an official in the Police Department. Officers arrived shortly before 7 p.m. and began searching for her in the marshland just blocks from her home, her father also joining them.

Several hours later, the police and Mr. Vetrano found her body face down. She was about 15 feet from a trail in a marsh, off the intersection of 161st Avenue and 78th Street, the authorities said. Investigators were waiting the results of an autopsy, but there were signs, police officials said, that Ms. Vetrano may have been strangled and sexually assaulted.

In the link, this also stood out to me...

The edges of the park still teemed with joggers, cyclists and dog walkers on Wednesday afternoon. Inside, striped bass fisherman stood in the surf up to their armpits, and on the sandy beaches, volunteers cleaned up debris left behind from religious ceremonies, including dozens of coconuts, chicken carcasses and the head of a goat.

I saw that story. Sad. Hearing about local stuff like this is difficult to hear. She just went on a run and ended up raped and dead.

Yeah, man...the way everything played out was like a plot to a crime show or movie. So sad.

The first time I remember hearing about Howard Beach was from Chris Rock 16 years ago . Judging from the interviews of most the people in this crime he did a good job describing the place

Caught the tail end of that news story when I came home yesterday. I didn't know what it was entirely about. Damn, so sad man.

Does it get dark in new york around that time?

I dont understand why women run early in the morning or during the evening.

A friend of mine started dealing with an Italian girl out there when we were in college...so I'd tag along for her friend.

I had no clue where I was, man. I could feel the mood change Everytime I walked into somewhere. Haven't been back unless I'm passing through on my way to JFK. That neighborhoods is still out of bounds in my book.

I have to say as a guy, it's sad but true that I don't have to worry as much as a woman does if she's going for a run or a walk somewhere. They have to worry so much more about something happening to them. If I have a daughter i'd always worry about stuff like this.

It was a neighborhhod where blacks would get chased out of passing through by prejudice italians

wait, is howard beach the hood in NY?
For as long as I can remember Howard Beach has been a strong Italian neighborhood. Not hood at all, just don't feel safe there.

the mob is still out there
I used to sit with her dad who was a stereotypical Italian man, and he'd tell me some ****. I don't wanna cast judgement on a whole neighborhood, but there is definitely still some activity out there.

Let me guess, she was running with earpods.

I dont understand people that alone oblivious to there surroundings with earpods in their ears.

Howard Beach is a few exits off the highway from me.

Such a sad story. Supposedly her dad pleaded with her to not go for the run as they always go together :frown: .

its still pretty light out at 7. its not broad daylight but its not night yet. either way, jogging thru some isolated area isn't the move. not trying to victim blame, but central park ahs had this problem for years, and altho you would think after a while people would learn not to run thru the park at night, it still happens.

her dad said not to run alone thru there for a reason (as i understand the story) and he was just trying to convey to her to be street smart. and a gorgeous girl like that def would attract the creeps. NYC isn't the city of yore, but its still the city. gotta play it smart and safe.

sad man :smh:, can't imagine what the dad is going thru.

furthest thing from the hood. You got italians over there living in mansions.

Anyways, she got 10k followers on instagram as a beautiful girl. Unfortunately you attract some creeps. One creep figures out her schedule and this is where we are at now. Hope whoever did this gets caught and punished.

This.

I just keep picturing him telling her not to go, only to find her body a few hours later.

I was out last night walking my dog as the sun was going down, and there were still plenty of joggers out on the bike trail. The trail I was on runs along side of a heavily wooded area...it's just something that's always in the back of my mind. Even as a man.

I just had a talk with my wife this morning because she's a jogger. When we go up to NYC to visit family, I was asking her about taking pepper spray.

my old co-worker knew her personally for years. **** is sad b. She was gorgeous. RIP :smh:

RIGHT....the one time he doesn't run with her, he loses her for life? :smh: im religous anymore but i pray for that man. idk much about the italians or the mob scene down there, but that rapist might have more to worry about than police..
