I used to live right down the street from there. I interested to know how it happened, but to be honest I wouldn't be surprised if it is was an accident

I remember those buildings are old and kinda worn down, even after they renovate them, they looked worn down.

used to ride through there on the J4, and as Rusty mentioned, those complexes are old as **** and the buildings are close together...

if it was a gas leak, i wouldnt be surprised...

RIP.

It could've been a gas leak.

That's one thing I hate about living in an apartment.

You don't know how responsible your neighbors are and if they're negligent they could just forget to leave the gas for the stove on or something.

Almost definitely a gas leak, I'm no expert but it seems that most often that's not as simple as someone leaving a stove on but a significant leak at the source/where the main gas line is in the building.  So many of those old buildings aren't maintained to high or really any standards, they're just left in whatever condition is necessary to generate enough rent and any repairs are made only when absolutely necessary.  Same thing with the explosion in Harlem a few years ago.  I don't want this to come across the wrong way but the article references a man who lives with 6 relatives, I've seen that in a 2 bedroom apartment with beds set up everywhere.  For the most part, that equates to landlords who just don't care or enforce any safety guidelines.
Officials said that on the night of July 25, firefighters were called to investigate the smell of gas at 8701. Logs show that personnel could not verify the smell and left the scene. Leggett said authorities are looking into that call.
Not good.
