They both utilize 3 center backs but only the 5-man back line formation would utilize wing backs.

The 3 man back line would most likely be a LCB/CB/RCB. The 5 man back line would feature the three CB's listed above, plus a LWB/RWB.

By definition the "4" in a 3-4-3 are a part of the midfield line, so even if there's width being provided on the outside and they're doing their share of defending they wouldn't be considered wing backs they'd be a RM/LM or RW/LW.

Yeah I actually used FIFA to try to figure it out

But I actually came across an article about Chelsea's 3-4-3 under Conte and it had me wondering about the formation since they're going through the whole defensive crisis.

The article was talking about how they would be using wing backs in a 3-4-3, and it had me thinking of FIFA with the 5-2-2-1 since that the only formation off the top of my head with wing backs.

But with what NorthOak just explained :

Thanks. Makes so much sense. I assumed the 3-4-3 had wing backs also.

So that would mean that a 5-2-2-1 would benefit Chelsea more than a 3-4-3 since Chelsea's back line at the moment isn't competant enough to have only 3 defenders in the back. With 5 back they'd have more coverage, but wing backs could also help in attack.

Not sure why the guy who wrote the article suggested wing backs in a 3-4-3 then

I guess my explanation was more in the literal sense imo using wing backs to refer to mids or wide players in a 3-4-3 certainly isn't wrong. 

For me when you start to delve into the minutia of formations it can start to become pretty arbitrary and/or subjective.

I'm not familiar with Chelsea's system but the role of the RM/RWB in relation to the three CB's and midfield could be identical whether it's called a 3-4-3 or a 5-x-x

yeah it's basically the same thing...especially nowadays how formations change from when teams have the ball and don't have the ball

I.E.  Barcelona start off in a 4-3-3 then morph in to a 4-4-2 when they are on the defensive

and when they have long periods of possession they drop busquets back sometimes between the 2 CB's and push their wing backs very far up and wide

essentially turning in to a 3-4-3 or a 3-5-2 when messi drops back in the midfield. 

basically it's really arbitrary cause in modern football the best teams change formations from defense to offense so much. 

watching pep at bayern was truly fascinating the way he changed formations sooo much and he had the personnel to do it. 

i wish we could get an in depth look at the top managers' tactics.  its amazing to watch.  Atletico right now is pretty fascinating because Simeone is having to change his attacking tactics to keep up with barca and real madrid. he's evolving his team and it's had some very mixed results.
