I've been seeing a therapist for the last 8 years
It makes me a better person, a better friend / coworker / boyfriend etc.

Therapist checking in.

Therapy works for some, but not others. Similarly, medication works for some, but not others.

A lot of people go to therapy even if they aren't experiencing a crisis or symptoms related to mental illness (anxiety, depression, hallucinations, etc.).

Never been to a therapist, or known anyone who has been to one. When I think of a therapist, I think of Dr Melfi from the Soprano's. When I'm feeling down, I usually grab a burrito and do a lot of self reflection wherever I eat it

I disagree with the, "Most people don't need therapy."

There are so many of us walking around with issues we have never dealt with that it would help it if we DID talk to somebody
This.  I feel like EVERYONE should go to therapy regardless of whether or not they have major mental health or personal issues.

It basically serves as a non-biased third party source for you to gain insight as to how to correct problems in your life.  Therapists are also good to bounce ideas off of because they're not emotionally invested in your life.  Much easier to reach rational conclusions when you have another person there to help you break things down logically.

And miss me with that "therapy is for the weak-minded" nonsense.  It's funny because dudes who say stuff like that are generally the most "weak minded" out of anyone.  Types of dudes who will ruin relationships with friends and family because the thought of admitting that they need help or need to talk to someone about it would crush their psyche.  THAT'S true fragility right there.

I can tell this thread has a possibility of getting out of control so PM me if you have any questions. To dumb it down therapy helps people talk about things they bottle up, that create big problems for them. It makes them feel like they are in a safe invironment, and open up and admit things they know deep down inside aren't right only YOU know your body and mind, and if something is wrong. Sometimes you just need that push to admit, or talk about it.

BTW talking to friends or family could be all you you need, sometimes they could make things worse.

And smoking helps, but it will never get rid of your issues for more than a few hours.

Most people cant even afford it though.

You should go because you have something that needs to be dealt with.

Going for the heck of it is ridiculous.

What's your thoughts on BA(behavioral activation)? One of my mentors been pushing this wave for a hot minute.

You're right going for the heck of it is absurd! For those who simply just can't afford it... try community centers or schools, some offer therapy for little to no cost. Also, many resources through the government to help with prescrptions you just have to look. If its bad enough going on dissability to cover doctors is an option they treat mental health very seriously. Try googling free mental health clinics in your area, mental health is no joke.

Waniac211: From what I've learned on BA is it's pretty effective with depression and some studies of anxiety. If your dealing with bigger issues meds and therapy IMO are your best option. From what I understand on BA, is it's just training yourself, kind of a behavioral conditioning(seems pretty similar to therapy IMO). Someone correct me if I'm wrong with BA I've not learned much about that.

I think it was a poor choice of words, but he's right. EVERYONE can benefit from it imo. I come from a psychiatry family, and even the most healthy individuals can benefit from it.

Ehh I don't know about that. I'd admit it probably doesn't come remotely close to a productive therapy session (never been) but it does make me indifferent to my problems which is enough for me to keep going.

Im going to make an assumption those free therapist are free for a reason. Im good.

I'm a smoker... and go to therapy and it DOES come close to a therapy session, but it doesnt get to the root of your problem. It just numbs it out for a while, and the same issues come back... unless you smoke 24/7.

Alot those free therapy places may be garbage, I assume they are like AA for mental health. I can speak for schools though, you deal with kids in college going to school to be a therapist. Some are actually quite good, they just haven't made a career out of it yet.

See this is something I'd actually do on the regular if we had Universal Healthcare because I know mental health should be the highest priority,

but im not going into debt trying to pay for it

I cant be in debt when im dead, it's a win/win

Not saying do it, guys just saying don't let money be the determining factor in treating a mental health issue, there are other options. You're right mental health should be one of the highest priorities.

Reached out to HR today about therapy sessions inside of my benefits.

Trying to go see a shrink and talk about life in this bish.

:pimp: :pimp:

Its not really free its reduced price. "sliding scale"

Rape victims and victims of special circumstances can get free counselling though

Even your most prestige psychologist does probono work.

You dont need to be a rocket scientist to listen to some one.

But if weed is your choice, then ok

I see how people catch feelings for their psych doc or therapist

you're telling this person your deepest thoughts and feelings  if you go long enough you really feel like they know you

after awhile I started asking myself "would I smash? nahhh chill"

I Talk to young/ middle age Liberian they like talking and reading personalities. Plus if shes okay looking, you'll smash. Cause they love fantasies

I don't think you understand that I'm speaking idealistically, not practically.  Obviously there are financial issues and the fact that it's hard enough to find a psychotherapist that's taking new patients as is.

did the therapy sesh not too long ago...

For some reason, I was walled up for the first few minutes. Then she was like "it's okay"

I started legit running my mouth like a teenaged girl.

I was telling her about stuff that I've held in for years. Felt really good just telling someone, no matter their reaction. The cool part was that she was real and told me "you know, a lot of your problems are magnified in our minds, when in actuality, they're just a part of this thing we call life"

I thought it was really nice. Next time, I want to go to a black woman. Just gotta find her somewhere.

Highly recommended for those who are having trouble finding someone to unload all your **** onto. Therapist just listen and let you talk, and don't say dumb **** like your friends or parents will.

:pimp: :pimp:

Ive been really stressed, burnt out, and anxious lately. I know my minds not in a good place. Probably will see a therapist this month. Hopefully my insurance covers it.
