Official 2017 Knicks Offseason thread, Phil Jackson gone

I know that Melo is a loyal dude, and I feel bad for chiding him in the past, but I really think that he should waive the NTC. Unlike Bron, who was seen as a villain for leaving Cle for Miami, and then Miami for Cle, Melo's situation would be completely understandable. He's going to end up like KG and be loyal to a fault. Of his entire draft class, he was always my favorite and I thought in the beginning that he was better than Bron. But damn, something has got to give, he isn't going to accomplish anything by staying on a sinking ship, he's been noble about this whole thing which is cool and all, but sheesh...... this "organization" will not support him in his quest to win.
Melo is who he's always been. A charismatic & marketable person. And a efficient & pure scorer with size. Everywhere he's been you have GM's and media complaining that Melo isn't a "leader" or carrying the team.

That's not who he is. It's not who he's ever been.

At Syracuse, he had McNamara at PG. That was the LEADER of that team. Melo was the best player. And Warrick was the guy inside doing the dirty work. And they played that zone that allowed everyone to save on energy. Everything people have traditionally been frustrated with Melo about were things other players did for him during his best years. The problem in the NBA is nobody has tried to recreate that same formula for Melo except for when the Nuggets had Chauncey Billlups and Kenyon Martin. Low and behold, that team set franchise records for success. But it was short lived as eventually Billups was moved.

Melo is not a leader. Melo will not carry a team. That doesnt mean he isnt GREAT at what he does well. He needs a STRONG point guard there to carry that emotional load. The same way Kobe needed Derek Fisher. Similar to the way Steph needs Draymond Green. Sometimes in this day and age, your best player isnt your leader. It's just the way it is and rather than try to force something that will never work, I wish GM's & coaches tried to work around the faults.

The Knicks have failed time and time again to get Melo that PG that can carry that burden. I dont blame them for acquiring Noah, he fits the Warrick mold. But Rose aint McNamara or Billups. And they definitely need a better coach.

The only chance Melo had of evolving into the player everyone wished he'd be is if the Piston wouldve drafted him. That squad was filled with leadership & every role was filled. Melo wouldve been a bench player his rookie year, and worked himself into a starting scorers role, and eventually might've learned to lead from some of the best. Over time. But that ship sailed the moment they chose Darko instead.

If you read this Willy, save yourself

Get outta here before it's too late
Whoa whoa whoa  I thought the tank was to rebuild. Can't be scaring off young talent  (the Oakley fiasco convinced me that we wont sign a marquee player for a while)

Porzingis is putting up pretty much the exact same numbers as last season but on better shooting percentages. I really would've liked him to improve a little bit more but that's not gonna happen until he's featured in the offense with a pass first PG.

We're setting ourselves up for failure if we think we'll land a top 5 pick. This team is stupid enough to make a late playoff push to miss it by 2 games.

KP def hasn't been playing well but I wouldn't put Billy's upside over KP. Willy is more of a traditional center and KP is like a friggin stretch 5

Forget upside if that's the word being hung up on  You said he might end up being better than KP

Damn, are we that down on KP already in the thread? Sure he's regressed a little because of fouls and injuries but now Billy has more upside?
Flood where did he or I say any of that

If you're saying Billy might be better than KP isn't that the same thing?

No way Billy comes close to KPs skill IMO

Skill is only a portion of becoming a great player. Billy realistically has a chance to be a 17 & 10 starting center in this league. As a rookie he has a great feel for the game and gets after it on every play. He absolutely can end up being "better" if we're already saying the likes of Myles Turner has already surpassed Kristaps

Anyone else see some David Lee in Billy?

Can get double doubles off the bench. Great hands. Can play the pick and roll game well. Has a higher ceiling defensively though. And before people take it as slander let's remember that Lee earned himself a big deal from what he did as a Knick.

Y'all realize Porzingis is putting up 18/7 on 45/38/78 in year 2?

Not like he's out here averaging 6 ppg
+ dealt with an achilles injury + starts with a pg in D. Rose who don't make the game that easier for him (4.5apg) 16 shot attempts per game

& another star in Melo on 24 shot attempts per game. Porzingis will be fine.
