Official 2017 Knicks Offseason thread, Phil Jackson gone

Iman isn't a bad player. He's just not a star. He still contributed to a championship team though.

technically everyone contributes on a team. even if they don't play in the game, they are still there to practice with the guys and provide competition. Shump really isn't a good player though. he's an overrated defender and he's athletic. i'm not saying he's garbage, but he definitely isn't worth his contract.

I think it's unfair to compare someone who is part of a championship rotation to someone who never plays.

Shump is garbage. He has somehow got a reputation for being a great defensive player when he never progressed as a player from his rookie years.

Eff Shump and talent notwithstanding but he's right...being involved with this organization the last 3years is hellish. Think about it he went from the Knicks to back to back championships :frown:

PHIL JACKSON REPORTEDLY WON'T FIRE JEFF HORNACEK

New York Knicks president Phil Jackson reportedly has no plans to fire head coach Jeff Hornacek despite the team's inability to live up to expectations following offseason roster upgrades.

Marc Berman of the New York Post reported Thursday that Hornacek's job is "safe" in part because he's maintained an open line of communication with Jackson.

More specifically, Hornacek has been willing to give the 71-year-old former Chicago Bulls and Los Angeles Lakers head coach input on installing the triangle offense. The team started the season by trying a hybrid approach that featured some additional pace.

Ian Begley of ESPN.com passed along comments the 13-time NBA champion made about the situation on The Big Podcast with Shaq in November.

"How do you teach a system that requires so many fundamental skills to players that really haven't been taught some of that basic stuff?" Jackson said. "Footwork and passing and all those rudiment type of skills that are learned that have been, that have changed over a few years? It's a different game."

Jackson has been on the court in recent weeks helping the team learn those basic elements of the triangle, according to Berman. The team's current coach stated he doesn't mind the extra help.

"We talk about stuff all the time," Hornacek said. "When he comes out and demonstrates for guys, he's so used to being out on the court. It’s fun for him to do. Guys getting another look at it from a guy who's run it for years and years."

In the bigger picture, it's been a disappointing season for the Knicks.

New York acquired Derrick Rose in an offseason trade with the Chicago Bulls and signed Joakim Noah, Courtney Lee and Brandon Jennings in free agency. The moves were made to bolster a roster that featured Carmelo Anthony and Kristaps Porzingis.

Rose was so confident following the overhaul that he declared the Knicks a "superteam" in the same category as the Golden State Warriors, per Lang Whitaker of NBA.com.

They haven't come anywhere close to fitting the label. Their record currently stands at 27-41; barring an unexpected late surge, they are set to miss the playoffs for the fourth consecutive season. It will send the front office back to the drawing board over the summer.

One change that apparently won't be made, however, is at head coach. Hornacek is primed to hold that position into the 2017-18 campaign.

Horny should be here passed Phil, without a doubt. We'll never get anything rolling in the right direction if we have a new coach every other season.

Let Hornacek run his offense with a real defensive coordinator (not Rambis' cam show watching ***) & that alone gives us at least 5 more wins.

Hornacek is a yes man which is what Phil seems to want to fill his management staff with, the hallmark of a bad leader. He allows Phil to do whatever he wants, change the style of play, take over training sessions etc. Everyone has a breaking point though, he'll eventually speak out and get let go like Fish.

How does not speaking down directly to your boss make you a yes man?

I'm almost 100% certain this isn't what Hornacek signed up for when he accepted the job and Phil never mentioned that he'd occasionally come down to coach the team whenever he felt like it

What do you want him to do?  Trash Phil to the media?  I think Hornacek is doing the best he can with what he's been presented with.  He can't fire Phil or Dolan, or trade Melo.  He's stayed out of the drama at least.

Funny how you guys blamed D'Antoni and then Woodson, too.  Now it's Hornacek's turn.

I don't think Hornacek is a yes man. He has been lightly critical of Phil. He's just in a tough position & has to do his job. He's handled it the best way anyone could in this disaster. Just wish his boss would let him coach his own philosophy

Didn't watch the game Tuesday but does anyone remember how Kuz played?

It was his first game after wearing Timbs so if he had a good/decent game we might be on to something

I think he got a DNP-CD
