From chron. Will have the new thread up either late tomorrow or Monday to allow for any other little moves. Looks like me and finessesosa finessesosa 's (or @50inchvert's) dream of Lonnie Ballentine finally becoming a major player to contribute is over

In a series of surprising moves today when they reduced their roster from 90 to 53, the Texans waived quarterback Brandon Weeden and guard David Quessenberry, retained kicker Ka'imi Fairbairn over Nick Novak, kept six running backs and kept injured receiver Will Fuller on the active roster.

The 53-man roster is an evolving process, so expect it to change as the Texans prepare for the Sept. 10 regular-season opener against Jacksonville at NRG Stadium.

The Texans kept all six draft choices – quarterback Deshaun Watson, inside linebacker Zach Cunningham, running back D'Onta Foreman, offensive tackle Julién Davenport, defensive end Carlos Watkins, cornerback Treston Decoud and center/guard Kyle Fuller.

Inside linebacker Dylan Cole and cornerback Dee Virgin were undrafted rookies who made the roster.

Besides Quessenberry, who hopes to be signed to the practice squad Sunday if he clears waivers, the Texans also waived their other backup guard, Chad Slade, clearing the way for Kyle Fuller, the seventh-round pick from Baylor, to make the team as a reserve center and guard.

Once players clear waivers Sunday at 3 p.m., teams can sign as many as 10 to their practice squad. Expect the Texans to bring back players they waived today.

The six running backs are Lamar Miller, Foreman, Alfred Blue, Akeem Hunt, Tyler Ervin and Jordan Todman. Blue has a high ankle sprain and is expected to miss a few games.

Will Fuller, who underwent surgery to repair a broken collarbone early in camp, wasn't placed on injured reserve even though teams can activate two players from injured reserve this season.

Strong is suspended for the first game against Jacksonville and can't return to the facility for practice and meetings until Sept. 11, the day after the opener.

The most surprising move was releasing Weeden. Because they are carrying Will Fuller, Strong and Blue on the roster, the Texans elected to go with two quarterbacks, at least for the first game.

Considering how many quarterbacks have played in Bill O'Brien's first three seasons as coach, it's doubtful they'll stay with only two on the active roster for very long.

Players released were Weeden, Novak, linebacker Sio Moore and outside linebacker Mike Catapano.

Players waived were Quessenberry, Slade, receiver Dres Anderson, nose tackle Eli Ankou, center Erik Austell, tight end Evan Baylis, safety K.J. Dillon, offensive tackle Laurence Gibson, receiver Justin Hardee, nose tackle Rickey Hatley, receiver Germone Hopper, cornerback Bryce Jones, receiver Marcus Leak, outside linebacker Eric Lee, receiver Riley McCarron, running back Dare Ogunbowale, inside linebacker Shakeel Rashad, cornerback Marcus Roberson, defensive end Daniel Ross, receiver Chris Thompson, guard Josh Walker, outside linebacker Tony Washington Jr. and inside linebacker Avery Williams.

Players waived/injured were tight end RaShaun Allen, safety Lonnie Ballentine, punter Cory Carter, defensive end Matthew Godin, cornerback Denzel Rice, safety Malik Smith and receiver Wendall Williams.
