~NEW. Houston. TEXANS. Preseason Thread 2017~ Pats @ NRG

Needing to win this game while also having a good showing is probably an understatement. The injuries don't help, but they simply need to do all they can to win. Blue is probably getting more carries than usual because of Lamar Miller nursing a slight shoulder injury but is still active. Pretty much everyone needs to be involved in every aspect of the game. Don't even need to single people out really. 5-3 looks much better heading into the bye than 4-4.

we gotta draft OJ Howard (Bama TE) by any means. Trade up, do whatever you need to do, but we need a dynamic TE since Brock only wants to throw to the TE

We aren't so bad when we aren't playing one of the top 5 teams in the NFL.

(Insert Kanye shrug pic)

Yea  Had to pretty much weather the storm. We basically beat the teams we were supposed to beat, and were assaulted by teams that are 3 of the top 5 teams in the league. The Pats are clearly the class of the AFC, and the Vikes/Broncos have the top two defenses. Would have been nice to have been competitive in more than just two quarters of the Denver game, but I can take 5-3 heading into the bye. Would have also liked to see more passing yards from Brock, but the right passes were being made mostly and catches were being made when they're supposed to. The game could have probably been over sooner had Hopkins/Brock not had miscommunication, which led to that pick. The defense had another bend but don't break outing again. Had some unfortunate penalties, but they held on, so it's all good. I also liked that they pretty much held a good quarterback in check, leading to their WRs not getting a whole bunch of looks. Now, just need to have guys get healthy, then try to make a more convincing run in the second half of the season.

Bouye may be looking for a payday at the end of the season if he keeps his play up. And going forward, more than likely Bouye >>> Kareem & JJoe.

bruh, Bouye >>> these guys at the outside CB position no question. JJ should be a slot corner imo. buddy can be food sometimes on the edge against big/rangy receivers. sometimes he's in the WR's pocket but is too small to make a play on deep balls. Ive liked what I've seen JJ do against TEs over the years though, he can be fiesty. Kareem would be a good rotational CB (if he's even talking about being that) ideally on a legit contending team.

The Broncos game is definitely where I was like :nerd: :nerd: :nerd: with Bouye. Even Gruden mentioned how it seemed like they targeted Bouye, then immediately went to Kareem once that wasn't working

Also, was listening to the radio earlier, and they were talking about how offensively, we're in the bottom in the league in so many categories. But I was very surprised hearing that we're 3rd in our own division of point differential, and we're only better than about 6 teams overall in that same category. We are very lucky not to be 0-8 because of atrocious offensive play  Hell, I kind of want to get off the defense's back completely because of that. If we were even getting #16 ranked QB play, we'd look much more respectable. We'd probably have the same record, but simply look better, especially vs the broncos, Vikes, and Pats.

yessss, and there was a point where Bouye went off the field..Broncos immediately started targeting his replacement (Kareem in that instance also I believe)

all of this. We're JJ Watt-less too. and KJ-less. The defense basically has to go out there with the mindset of 3 and out every single drive. Can't really play a "bend not break" style or any smaller version of it with the offense being so terrible. We're still kinda bending, but not much. Ive been pretty pleasantly surprised. If we can figure out how to be dominant in stopping the run, we'll be in the elite defensive conversation imo

meh

8 games is a very small sample size. Even less reliable when we've played the vikings and bronco's defense, along with a 27-0 drubbing

You just perfectly described Charles James too

I can recall three plays off the top of my head where James has been in perfect coverage, but it just too small to makes plays.

 and it will be KJ's fate too unless we keep him mostly in the slot/guarding intermediate routes. This is why I was so pressed on drafting Marcus Peters (before he was a rookie Pro bowler) simply because we never obtain the correct mold of DB. It seems super obvious, just look at how most of the dominant defenses over the past few years are built

It didn't help that Kareem was coming off injury, but even before then he had looked pretty bad  the injury just made it worse. That TD to Demaryius Thomas was so obvious

Injury updates:

Not practicing: Jaelen Strong, Will Fuller, Brian Peters, Vince Wilfork, Christian Covington

Texans wide receiver Jaelen Strong is expected to miss roughly a month with sprained ankle.

Vince Wilfork (groin) and Will Fuller (knee, hamstring) are also both still recovering from injuries they suffered in the last tilt against the Detroit Lions before the bye week.

Aaron Wilson of Chron.com reported the following:

Wilfork injured his groin against the Lions and didn't return. If Wilfork is out Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars, rookie D.J. Reader could make his first NFL start in his place.

Fuller has been dealing with knee and hamstring injuries and was forced out of a win over the Detroit Lions.

Wide receiver Jaelen Strong is expected to miss roughly a month with a sprained ankle he sustained against the Lions. Strong was in a walking boot after the game and had a magnetic resonance imaging exam.

Texans inside linebacker and special-teams player Brian Peters is still out with a quadriceps injury that has kept him out since a road loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
There is some good news being reported about cornerback Kevin Johnson, who suffered a broken foot a few weeks ago, as it sounds like surgery was not necessary:

Texans corner Kevin Johnson didn't require surgery for broken foot that sidelined him for remainder of season. Long-term outlook is good

— Aaron Wilson (@AaronWilson_NFL) November 7, 2016
Aaron Wilson included this regarding Kevin Johnson:

Johnson underwent offseason surgery after his rookie season to address a Jones fracture in the same foot. This time, Johnson is allowing the foot to heal on its own. Johnson's long-term medical outlook for the foot is regarded as good.

Let’s hope that Wilfork and Fuller are ready to go soon. After seeing the Denver Broncos get handled by the Oakland Raiders, Houston is going to need as much talent available as possible in a couple of weeks when they face the Raiders in Mexico City.

Fuller is back practicing after his hamstring injury.

Wilfork, Grimes, Brian Peters and Ballentine |) didn't practice either. Only Wilfork did some light work.

Remember when Fuller was putting up numbers?

That was cool.

Yea that was fun. Speaking of, he's now listed at out, along with Bouye and Wilfork. That is not good. Will only be able to watch some of the first half. My son's first birthday is today :smokin been rough planning this party

Also, pretty yeah much have three active receivers. Akeem hunt was called up from the practice squad, so I'm sure he'll get some early use. Stephen Anderson will get more looks at well, and can get split out wide with Tyler Ervin too.
