~NEW. Houston. TEXANS. Preseason Thread 2017~ Pats @ NRG

The NFL named Houston Texans OLB Whitney Mercilus the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his performance against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

Mercilus recorded four tackles, a team-leading 2.0 sacks, two quarterback hits, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble in Houston’s 23-14 season-opening victory. He was a part of a defense that limited the Bears to just 258 net yards of offense, the second-lowest total allowed by an AFC team in Week 1.

Mercilus became the third player in team history with 2.0 sacks on Kickoff Weekend, joining J.J. Watt and Mario Williams. He also posted his third consecutive multiple-sack game (including postseason) dating back to Week 17 of the 2015 season, which is the longest active streak in the NFL. He has registered nine total games in his career with 2.0-or-more sacks.

Since Week 6 of the 2015 campaign, Mercilus leads the NFL with 14.0 sacks in 12 regular season contests. Including the postseason, he has registered 17.0 sacks in his last 13 games.

This is the first Player of the Week award for Mercilus in his career and the 36th time a Houston Texan has been named Player of the Week in franchise history. It is also the second consecutive regular season week that the Texans have won the award, as Watt won it in Week 17 of last season.

From ESPN:

HOUSTON -- Coming out of college as the No. 1 overall draft pick, Houston Texans outside linebacker Jadeveon Clowney was known as a tremendous athlete. Now his knowledge of football is making him more versatile in his third season.

Clowney is playing more at defensive end opposite J.J. Watt this season, and Texans coach Bill O’Brien said he thinks Clowney's knowledge of the game makes the change easier.

“He’s the type of player that you can move around and ask him to do different things because he understands football,” O’Brien said. “He really understands blocking schemes, I believe. He really likes to play all different spots. He’s into the game plan every week.”

O’Brien said the Texans hadn’t been able to utilize Clowney’s versatility because he missed 15 games of his first two NFL seasons to injury. The coaching staff has been able to work with Clowney more because he was on the field for most of training camp.

“We were able to move him around,” O’Brien said. “Because if you’re not out there, once you do get back, you’re really just a one-spot guy. But when you’re out there and you’re getting all the reps, ‘Hey J.D., we’re going to stick you here today. Tomorrow we’re going to put you there.’

“And on top of the fact that he’s a very bright player; he really understands the game. Because he understands the game, you’re able to move him around. Plus the fact he’s healthy and he’s out there, that helps too.”

Before his rookie season, Clowney needed hernia surgery. He also suffered a concussion during the preseason, and then in his first career NFL game, he significantly injured his left knee. He needed two surgeries on the knee to repair the lateral meniscus tear.

Last season, Clowney missed time with a Lisfranc sprain in his right foot and an injured back.

Now that Clowney is healthy, he is showing flashes of why he was the No. 1 pick in the 2014 draft. In Sunday’s 23-14 victory over the Chicago Bears, Clowney played all over the field. He registered a sack, four combined tackles -- including two for a loss -- and three quarterback hits.

Clowney said the Bears double-teamed him more than usual. He joked after the game that it was “rough,” and that he understood what Watt goes through each game at defensive end.

“Whatever they want me to do,” Clowney said. “I’m down there fighting with 350-pound linemen. It isn’t fun, but you have to do your job, go out there, compete and do extra.

“It’s a lot easier than being an outside linebacker. You just listen to the call, move to the left or the right a couple of steps and get off the ball, stay in your gap.”

While the 6-foot-5, 270-pound Clowney might be a little leaner than a typical defensive lineman, O’Brien said Clowney makes up for it in other ways.

“He has tremendous explosion, and he’s got a real knack for finding the football,” O’Brien said.

Nose tackle Vince Wilfork, one of the leaders of the defense, said he has noticed the difference in Clowney now that he is healthy.

“He’s worked his tail off this year, all offseason and coming back in shape,” Wilfork said. “He’s playing, he’s happy, he’s smiling. That’s what we want. The more we can have that, the better this team will be.”

Was watching highlights of the Texans/Chiefs playoff game, and wow, being reminded that Hoyer was at minimum 90% of the reason they lost is :x :x Chiefs are beatable, just can't end up in a hole quickly, and can't get beat on matchups. Big plays like against Chicago can't happen. Kelce needs to be limited as much as possible, and can't get fooled on different formations they may use with Alex Smith and their two RBs. If the Chargers can geta big lead on them, so can the Texans, and I feel like we'd be able to hold and take advantage of a lead if we get a big one. Special teams has to come to play as well.

Reeeeeeally don't like the Texans only coming away with 3 points after KJohnson's 52 yard return. Points are premium against a team like this

Great to exercise some demons from the playoffs. Defense set the tone and played well pretty much the entire game. The offense made plays when needed, but the o-line was atrocious. Brock got some of those passes off simply cause he's big and tall. Really need Duane Brown back, along with general consistency. Lamar Miller wasn't given too much help by the line, but both him and the WRs managed to get key first downs when needed. The defense was all over the field making life hell for Smith, and only gave up plays late. Still need to work on the run D more, but i can't complain much about the defense. everybody did something. Watt, Clowney, McKinney, Simon, KJohnson, Hal, Bouye....so many guys contributing. Special teams didn't play as well as last week, and had it not been a penalty on the Chiefs, that could have been a disaster. Short turnaround this week. Won't officially know whether Jimmy G will go or not til probably Tuesday or Wednesday.

They cheated Nuk of that TD though

Even with them not ruling it a TD, they STILL should've called a PI on the DB, cause that's why Hopkins was off balanced trying to catch that in the first place

Trill Fuller :pimp:

Sons hands are shaky but boy can fly

All he has to do is keep out running everyone and he'll have time to juggle and catch.

Fuller makes me nervous, but not like how Kesean Martin and Jacoby Jones used to make me nervous

I only trust a few things about rick smith.

His first round picks.

His value FA signings.

In fuller I trust

Take a look at the 2102 and 2013 drafts. Hopkins, Griffin, and Mercilius are the only guys still left. That is atrocious. The amount of whiffs in those drafts is unbelievable. I'm not too bothered by guys we let go fur to paydays (Barwin, Crick, Mitchell, etc), but we could sure use Ben Jones and Brandon Brooks right now

won't lie, Will made me a believer pretty quickly. Mainly just that he has a good release off the line, some solid agility/vision, and seems to be generally cerebral and trying to hone his craft. Those damn drops gotta be gone by year 2-3 though

So I've watched most of you guys first two games because Lamar Miller is on my fantasy team....did you guys lose any starters on your OL or are they just not playing very well? The run blocking has been pretty bad. Lamar just needs a hole and he's taking off but it's like he's just running into the back of the OL for like 3 or 4 yards every time.

Yea,

Duane Brown (former all pro LT) hurt
Lost Ben Jones
Nick Martin out for the season

we added Jeff Allen, but our OL is definitely in bad shape. If we can get that together, this might be the best team we've had to date.

You would think that with having a more respectable QB than they've had in years along with Hopkins and Fuller that Lamar would have tons of running room but it definitely hasn't happened yet. You think it'll be a lot better once Duane Allen is back?

he's getting old, but yea. We need both him and Nick Martin back. We need to hit on more picks or in FA on the OL too b/c we don't know how good Nick will actually be. Most of us are assuming b/c of his brother

and Siafilo looks like a bust

and it never hurts to have a little depth at OL even if all your starters are there.

Plus, I always say it, but Derek Newton was in conversation of worst starting RT in the league imo. He's had some of his better years recently though, ill admit.

This. Newton was soooooo bad at one point, and played his way into a good contract, and has played pretty well since. There's just injuries and too many guys having to shuffle around, not enough consistency

OL is a bad spot on the team. also, not utilizing miller's speed by getting him on the edge. really trying to force him into a between the tackle rusher

Yeah that's another thing I don't get. They're feeding him the ball to go up the gut like he's a damn power rusher. He's not breaking any big plays right now because they aren't getting him on the edge at all.

Yea that's been very annoying even with the bad OL, got him trying to be Eddie George or Jerome Bettis SMH
