How do you paint sole without chipping

Hey,
I painted a pair of Jordan's and a pair of Huaraches. I just used angelus leather paint and the finisher. The paint chipped off on the side of the sole & mid sole. What paint should I be using or what can I do different? I have googled this but can't find an answer and the tutorials I watched seemed to be doing same as me... Any help much appreciated!

i used paint for rubber boats

on jordan 1.....

other thing  that was better then angelus was plastdip....great stuf ....

only midsole...

From what i've seen it depends on the type of midsole that's on the shoe. Based on my experiences foam based midsole's will adhere better to paint than phylon based midsoles. I did a black and gold custom on a pair of all white huraches. I painted the midsole black and after a couple wears the paint still holds up.

The ONLY paint that works on midsoles are RALEIGH RESTORATIONS "Scratch Resistant Sealer", note*** this is only for use on midsoles of rubber or other parts of the shoe that are rubber i.e heel guard, lace-strap,etc. Very easy to apply, about 15 layers of paint then sealer and IF EXECUTED PERFECTLY you can even attempt to scratch the paint of with something sharp like a knife.

As for the SOLES of shoes, most paint will come off due to ABRASION of contacting the ground. The product from ANGELUS 'WALK ON RED/ or BLACK" is designed specifically for high heel soles but can also be used for sneakers. Another alternative is to buy "sole protectors" and put them on after you have painted the soles.

Hope this helps

Yeah I use Rally Restorations Scratch Sealer, I used it exactly how he tells you to do it in the one video on YouTube and paint still cracked and I’m not talking about paint cracking after a little while I’m talking as in I put the sneakers on and they lasted half a day of normal walking. Think I had put 8 coats on...

it could be the adhesion or how the paint is sticking to the midsole, are you using any adhesion promotor?

That’s exactly what it was the adhesion, so I have since corrected the issue somewhat and seems like durability is pretty good now...I’m using a medium to soften up the paint a bit and seems to be much better but now I have to “heat set” the paint and that can be tricky at times for me. As for promoter I do have Bulldog adhesion promoter and tried it once without much luck but not sure if I did it right or not 🤷🏻‍♂️. Thoughts?

just to confirm, you ARE cleaning the shoe with acetone first??to remove dirt and make the bulldog adhesive stick

When you are painting the layers MAKE SURE they are thin , thick coats causes cracking so heat set in between layers of sealer/paint.

it could also be that your midsoles are crumbling/getting old

Yeah I actually have a really decent setup with Deglazer and everything. Also I sand the midsoles before painting to help with adhesion...does anyone else sand?

Quick question, with bulldog promoter how long do I wait to paint after I spray the promoter on? As for my midsoles being too old possibly I doubt it’s that as most of the maxes I work on are anywhere from 2008 - 2019.

use a heat gun or blowdryer to speed up process, depends on temperature outside i guess
