I wanna live in NYC... Whats step #1

As long as u got money to make the move make it happen OP ...u can always become a male escort/stripper out there , and I hear credit card fraud is booming in NYC right now

Good luck

What the hell is wrong with you people? I'll never understand why people continue to flock here in droves just to pile up upon one another every day in this overpopulated city.

I gotta get out of New York.
Why? This place is a ****hole, to be completely honest...lol

New York is hardly NY anymore, city done lost its essence to a bunch of yuppies.
Pretty much this. There's no space here because of all the people from around the country who wanted to come and be a part of it all.

I'm starting to understand the shunning of non-native New Yorkers.

I mean before you come here I would hope you would secure a position first. There's gonna be I.T. work everywhere you go and the base salary for most of those positions are decent for nyc standards. Just stay away from K2 and trendy areas and you'll save your life and lots of money in rent.

what job markets are boomin right now? for all the nt'ers who live in the city right now what do yall do if you dont mind me askin

im graduating this dec with a degree in history

but i got 2+ years of basic IT work in... mostly help desk stuff so i wanna get into IT field... any tips? :nerd:

Be rich or prepare to live in a ghetto off assistance.

I mean seriously if your asking what job markets are booming chances are your fighting 4 thousand other people for scarce jobs you should just stay your butt where you are, especially with a liberal arts degree.

Same with San Francisco. I can for the most part get along with anybody, but not hipsters. I was at a bar in San Francisco a while back and couldn't wait to get out of there. the people annoyed the living hell out of me like never before.
I moved to NYC in may. As bad as San Francisco is, its still grimy and urban. No matter who moves it always has that seedy underground. Regardless of the yuppies. NYC is an amazing city but it seems to be done, I go everywhere and I just dont have fun here. In sf you can smoke pot in the streets. Cannibus lounges. This is just a California transplants outlook. Obviously different strokes...

Don't normally agree with you, but you are correct sir. I eventually want to leave here.

You better have some damn good connections to move to NYC with a history degree...

Read somewhere last year that "everyone owes it to themselves to live in NYC at some point in their lives, and everyone owes it to themselves to move out of NYC at some point too".

And I couldn't agree more.

I do think it's much easier to make the NY move when you're (relatively) younger. Most people don't move here as they get older, they leave as they get older. With that being said, at 21, 22 fresh out of college you probably dont have a ton of money saved to help facilitate a potential move but in your mid 20s? Sure.

Is the city changing for the worse as time goes by? I would say so, but it still has so much to offer that you won't find anywhere else. There are still neighborhoods in the "outer boroughs" that are fire. I stay near Prospect Park in BK and man I love it there.

Non-locals and people looking to move here often don't realize that "NY" is so much more than Manhattan. Some people think it's all high rise buildings and $3000 rent - no and no. It's definitely not cheap but like anything else in this world if you want it bad enough you'll make it work.

Jobs? Scour indeed and craigslist, be open in your job search, don't be narrow minded, be willing to put in work to make ends meet. Too many cats think it's just going to be easy enough if they ask where the hookups are at. Damn near every job market is here to some extent.

I'll be here at least a couple more years but eventually, hopefully I relocate out west.

*Edit

To answer OP's original question - you CAN land a history related gig if you look hard enough/are open to certain gigs. A lot of museums in and around the city. I know someone with a history degree who landed a full time gig at a rare books store.

But considering your IT experience you're much more likely to land something there. Places are always looking to hire for IT, help desk support in particular. Start applying now though. And simultaneously during the job search - research neighborhoods in BK/Queens/Harlem/the Bronx and see what catches your attention.

I don't agree and I've lived in the city for years prior a to my move out to Denver few months ago. People should owe it to themselves to atleast visit, stay for about a week though. Living in NYC just isn't that necessary for majority of people

the people that usually say NYC is the best place on earth aren't well traveled.

Not all cases.

I was born and raised in brooklyn, i travel here and there, but im so used to NY that i just want to come back.

I moved out of NY 3x and always find myself back in NY.

It's just always something to do, it could be day or night, there ALWAYS something to do. Thats what I love about it.

like chris rock said about KD going to the bay area " you cant get sushi in OKC at 2am "

You're right, it's not all cases. It irks me that some people think NYC is "it". There's more than just NYC out there. This is coming from someone that lived in NYC

Might move out to Brooklyn for a temporary job for 6 months, but my main goal is to go out there and fail, like I never acted before, but I'm going to try out for every casting call there is....also is prospect park a chill area?

Hard to blame them

Since I've been on NT during Ezboard days, its always been and have been NY vs Cali, so as a New Yorker you just feel superior and want to claim NY is the best :smokin

I live in between prospect park and sunset park now.

Prospect park is def changing, I see alot of ice cream shops now and more white people ( not trying to sound racist ) but it was full of spanish and blacks, now its less and less everywhere. Rent could be going high.
