EL SERENO (CBSLA.com) —  Cal State Los Angeles has come under scrutiny for offering segregated housing for black students.

Under the new program called Halisi Scholars, the campus set aside about 20 spots in its 192-unit dorm complex for black students and anyone who shares similar concerns.

Communications major Aaron Rodgers is a participant. He insisted that everyone is welcome.

“We don’t want to come off as we are separating ourselves,” Rodgers said. “If you want to live in the black dorms, you shouldn’t have that fixed mindset … “Oh, I just want to live the black dorms because I’m black.’ In this whole building, there are other races,” Rodgers explained.

Some people on social media are blasting the program and calling it self-segregation.

Halisi was created after the university’s Black Student Union issued a list of demands  in response to its claims of racial discrimination on campus.

In a letter addressed to university President William Covino, the union wrote: “Black students at Cal State LA have been, and still are, consistently made the targets of racist attacks by fellow students, faculty and administration.”

A Cal State L.A. spokesperson, who declined to go on camera, insisted that the program is open to all students.

Jonathan Thomas is also a participant. “Right outside the hall, there’s people of every ethnicities around. We’re all integrated. We all hang out together,” he said.

Asked if he was worried about the perception of segregation. Thomas said: “At the end of the day, they need to be here in order to see that it’s really not.”

Several students, who spoke to CBS2/KCAL9’s Tom Wait off camera, shared concerns about separating by race. But most seem to agree Halisi Scholars poses no real threat to campus life.

“People here, they come from so many places. So, when you see someone from your own race, you can learn from them, too. So, I don’t think that’s a problem at all,” Karina Orta said.

Cal State L.A. also pointed out that other universities across the state have similar programs.
As I watched this on the news this morning the first thing that came to mind was 'Higher Learning'.

As a CSULA alum I'm not surprised by this.

The media is going to run with this and cause even more unnecessary tension within the black and brown community. Instead, the media needs to focus on the fact that there are issues within different racial communities and quit acting like this a new thing and everything has been peachy keen since CRA, and figure out how to educate youth (since racism is learned).

I can't thank my mom (RIP) enough for pushing me to have a diverse group of friends and learning about different cultures.

What are your thoughts?

I'd prefer to live in a dorm room full of diversity.

Being Filipino, I know I wouldn't opt to live in a dorm hall full of Filipinos.

Slippery slope.

Shouldn't even be an option. If you want to go to school make the "horrible" sacrifice of being in the company of other races..

If black students really being harassed n subject to racist **** over there then they should have a place to feel comfortable n not worried bout all that on campus ( this goes for anybody on that campus as well) ...I'm not there so I don't know what's really going on tho

At the same time u not paying or taking out loans to deal with racism n harassment tho ...being around other ppl isn't bad, being around other ppl who not treating you right is tho

I'm all for diversity but in college I was put in the the "black" dorm. Although there were still other races( my roommate was white) is just more concentrated black people. It was definitely more fun than the other forms around. I wouldn't opt into that kinda thing but I can kinda understand it

A lot of smart dumb ****** are coming up with these ideas that are setting us back without even knowing it.

That's my take. I'm Mexican and went to csula and I was a pariah cause I hung out with the track and bball players so most the frats made it clear I wasn't "Mexican enough".

But in the same breath, unity thru diversity is necessary and the black Union should fight to change policy and get consequences in place for any type of racism or harassment, no matter the race.

This is stupid and won't "protect" black students from anything. Now all the racists are just gonna target their dorms just like they draw Swastikas on Jewish frat houses in UC Campuses

sounds like homeboy is prescribing "prison cafeteria" rules when implementing dorms...
"oh you wanna sit there? u can, its just all da bloods sit in tthat section too, its where they feel comfortable".

I understand the want for it. Hell, they have plenty of girls-only dorms on campuses.

Post says they set aside rooms for Black students and "others that share similar concerns". So is this actually just a Black dorm, or an area for any student that feels discriminated? I think that should be cleared up.

Self segregation isn't new. Even if it wasnt an official school program, you'd still see roommates trying to get spaces for themselves and others like them. One year me and about 10 other people I was cool with managed to get one half of a floor.

Go to a large majority white Uni and I would rock with this all the way

This definitely would not fly at the school I went to.
ITT Tech?
How did you know?

Nah, not feeling this idea. The point of College is to experience and meet people from all walks of life. I say "Nay".

I don't like the idea. I feel like one of the above comment, it's hustling backwards. It will actually bring more attention to them. And make things awkward when the campus police is always at said dorm housing. It's going to cause way more conflict than comfort.
