how can I design T-shirts?

some of my colleagues want to design a t shirt for our group at school. It's kinda like a contest.. Just thinking a plain Gildan t shirt. I have some ideas but wanted to know if there is a program or website people use? Also wanted to use some gothic or Rock/Metal inspired fonts like the ones for Purpose Tour or Metallica, any ideas how to find those?

There are some free sites but mostly you would need illustrator or photoshop Adobe
