Employees Don’t Have a Right to Wear Dreadlocks Ruled 3-0 In the Court Of Appeals.. Thoughts? Do you

This is just sickening, as a young man with dreads (had them for 5 years) this is disheartening. I understand you have to been clean and professional but alienating a hairstyle that is attractive and can look neat with regular maintenance is just ignorant.
couldn't have said it better myself

So if black people or gay people don't look or act in a manner acceptable to a business, they have the right to not employ just because they own a business?

Not sure if serious or not
well gay people copmanies comply because they will sue and WIN!!! lookup publix.. they just pay the settlements

It was sarcasm

i know.. i was just comenting on the photos..

I mean...a person who owns a business should have the right to employ people who look and act in a manner acceptable to them. it's their business (unless they receive public funding).

are you saying that black people "act black" and gay people "act gay"???

what are you insinuating with this?
What are you even talking about weirdo  The dude said business owners have the right to not hire someone if the way they look or act isn't appeasing to them. My response was does he think it is ok for a business owner to not hire someone who for example looks black or acts gay. I'm sure you know how someone can look black, ask Ninjahood. He looks black right? If you are unaware of what acting gay may look like I could share some links with you as well.

So just let me know what point you didn't understand beloved? Dimelo

I would LOVE to see this.

Go ahead brah, post them links

A beard or visible tattoos is something that affects men of all races so no it would not be called racist if a company has rules against it. Locs however are mainly worn among the black community (yes other races can wear them) but its still predominately seen among black people which is why we are taking offense with it. Oh it's "messy" or "too aggressive" of a hairstyle :rolleyes

dude is blowing his dog whistle and doesn't even know it...

why dont you stop playing dumb and acting like someone who is in a professional setting wouldnt have "regular maintenance" on their dreads

you beating the same dead horse dudes already killed when ppl tried to bring up gunplay or weeknd

"stop playing dumb" who the hell do you think you are?

the lady who was the hr said "they tend to get messy, NOT YOURS, but you know what I mean"

aint that a "dog whistle"?

but you dont see that cuz u too busy trying to fake call ppl out with yo sucka ***

there's no in between?

The problem is the "professional appearance" is rooted in a corporate white heterosexual males.

We need to adjust what "professional appearance" is b/c when it was first coined, I'm fairly certain folks didn't envision all these gay / minoritiy / female folks working in a professional enviroment.

now THIS is the better conversation...

what is "professional" in 2016....

Good lord.

i really want to see those videos of people "looking and acting black"

Dreadlocks =/= tattoos, piercings nor any other aforementioned though.

Next these crackers will be tryna say a temp fade is an extreme style.

I agree, I was actually editing my post to say that, but the negative stereotype already exists that dreads are "messy", and it's not just with black people. Dreads actually look fine to me if you're black, but if you see a white dude with dreads, I bet 99% of people will think he's some dirty funny smelling hippie/stoner type.

In my profession it's not just dreads; I can't show up to meetings with long hair, 2009 Bieber hair, mullets, ponytails, man buns, etc. either. My boss wouldn't care, but my conservative client from Nebraska that we bill $$$$ every month probably will. That's why it really depends on the type of job and office environment before you call someone straight up racist for not hiring you based on having dreads. Something clearly racist to me would be having a black woman straighten her hair for work or being fired for having "unprofessional" natural curly hair, which I know has happened before.

yea different industries have different levels of corporate decorum. in the world of business and finance, 100% corporate is the move. from shirt and tie with maybe a suit jacket, down to saying hello over hey in an email (real talk). tech startups and some engineering jobs can be more lax. many will even tout lax work attire as a benefit (which imo it is cuz jcrew casual > full suit everyday). google, facebook, amazon...lax attire.

As a minority, particularly a black man, presentation means so much in this world. every day we are perceived like ****. it is in our best interest to be presentable, especially at work. because there will ALWAYS be someone at work, boss or coworker, who will look for a way to give you a hard time, so the way i see it you don't want to create an easy tool for the haters to use against you. signature fade wit da bevel blade is my go to. down the road, you can explore a different style. that's the safe bet. i'd never think to go to an interview with anything other than a 1.5 all around with a taper.

this is world we live in today unfortunately. hoodies, tats, the "wrong" haircut can send the "wrong" message. there is nothing wrong in playing the field safe.

is this discrimination? im leaning yes. while i think dreads are harder to pull off professionally, they can be presentable if done right.

furthermore, what about ALL THOSE WHITE WOMEN WHO BLEACH THEIR HAIR? neat and presentable aside, if dreads aren't allowed, dudes with pigtails are out of bounds, women with bleached hair (or color it anything) out of bounds. if you a white dude and you got the bon iver haircut, FOH. that ain't professional.

Do a lot of work places not want guys to have long hair?

My friend told me his company doesn't allow facial hair anymore. You have to be clean shaven and have clean cut haircuts. I look weird without facial hair, I at least need to rock some stubble.

They say that ****, in until you shave and look like **** lol. Case by case. You go in there dipped and looking sharp they ain't saying ****.

I will never un-see this now...I know exactly the one you're talking about, that's an incredibly apt description.

...but yeah, your individual employer set those standards and while that's great (not "isn't that cute" great, but "legitimately encouraging" great), others have different standards. it's all in the hands of the man with the business plan.
