I don't blame the players for doing it. Essentially stretching out their careers, but how does the league go about controlling when it happens?

They didn't have a choice, he wasn't going to sign without it.
Knicks painted themselves into a corner because they never built the team properly, brought in a true second star or had any picks that were franchise talent until KP.

People are still going to complain. You have season ticket holders and people who purchase well in advance. So if they're not announcing a few hours before a game...when exactly would be the right time to do so?
Personally...I don't give a ****. I wouldn't go see the Cavs and feel like Lebron "owes" it to me to play. I don't exactly know how you fix the problem. What can the league really do?

No.. Not every shot. But after watching Melo chuck up long contested 2 after long contested 2 in iso and pulling up from 3 in 3 on 1s over and over and over again, I'm of the opinion that Melo should take a seat all the way in the corner and give his shots to Rose and KP
Melo should not be leading the Knicks in shot attempts anymore.
People can criticize D Rose's tunnel vision on drives but at least he is driving and making the defense react. Melo's way the only opponent who is working is the one guarding him, and even he can't be working that hard because Melo never drives the ball.. He'll jab fake, dribble the ball around for 5-6 seconds and take a long contested 2....
He freaking loves the long contested 2..
Did I mention that he loves the contested 2?

Less games or longer season in duration but not games played.
It's for competitive advantage at the end of the day, the only responsibility for those in charge is to win.
NBA is entertainment but it's also a business, those mad at resting don't understand the other side of that.

NBA definitely ain't going to move to less games. They ain't trying to lose that revenue. The longer season in duration idea is interesting. That may effect things like olympic competition tho.
Co-sign on the last part. Their "job" is to win first...not entertain ******. They not animals in an exhibit. It's up to the league management to provide a solution to the fans. Not the players.

This isn't really about the season ticket holders.
This is about the people who only have a chance to see their favorite players every so often.
I agree it's a complex issue, but it's not gonna stop unless you give the ticket buyers ample notice to make an informed decision and punish teams for resting players who aren't injured.
You can say it's only their job to win games, but in reality their primary job is to provide entertainment to fans who will spend money on the NBA product.
League is nothing without fan support and this seems like a rather stupid issue to risk losing any support over.

And the ticket buying public isn't an integral part of that business? I think the solution is pretty simple, if a healthy star ends up resting, give everyone a refund. Would at least show some goodwill towards the fans. Especially since they're not going to sacrifice the business aspect by going to less games.

Their (as in the players). It's the NBA's job to provide the entertainment. So whether it's altering the schedule or providing some sort of refund...it's their issue. Tyron Lue and Lebron James don't owe nobody ****. From their perspective...their primary focus is not to entertain. Fan interaction and experience is already built into their duties as far as public appearances, meet and greets, banquets, etc. That doesn't extend to games as something they "have" to do.
