see if you can get a jump. Take it to discount auto parts, and they'll check the battery and alternator

Same thing happened to my car not long ago, had jumper cables but 2 cars coudnt jump me. AAA came and jumped me no problem.

If youre terminals are corroded or dirty it may be that, or you need A LOT of juice.

Alternator or battery. Gotta do trial and error to figure it out. Try to change the battery first since its cheaper.

Loose terminals can be the cause too. My car is doing the same but it has loose and corroded terminals, plus the battery is low because I barely drive. I'll probably take care of that this weekend.

If he buys the battery, and the alternator is the problem, he'll spend more money in the long run. That alternator will kill that battery sooner rather than later.

If it cranks but won't turn then it might be the alternator. If it was the battery then it wouldn't even try to start cause it'd be dead. But yea, the alternate can and will drain your battery if it's bad. I think it could affect your starter as well.

You need to take either your car to a parts store and they can check both battery and alternator. Or you can take your battery and they'll check it.

When my terminals in my old Honda were bad it cranked but would make a crazy *** sound.

If you can get to AutoZone they'll check everything for you and run the proper tests.

What kind of car is it?

Its difficult to tell what it is from what you've told us, not enough information. Are you comfortable with cleaning the battery terminals? You could disconnect the battery then clean the terminals and clamps with a water and baking soda solution using a toothbrush as a scrub. Reconnect them and make sure they're on tight (not too tight though). This needs to be done first. If it still doesn't start, but cranks normally(not slowly), its either an ignition or fuel system issue.

Go with the cheapest option first. Clean the battery terminals and make sure they're not loose and see if that helps. If not either get a jump or take out the battery and go to a place like AutoZone. They can check your battery, starter, and alternator while still in the car with they're battery tester and it's free. Doubt it's going to be your alternator unless it's not charging your battery because your alternator is what powers all the electronics in your car once the car's on, it doesn't start your car. If it's not your starter or your battery than next step would be to take it in to a shop for service.

Could be a few things such as battery, starter, alternator, or distributor. What kind of car is it?

My battery light came on last week and it turned out to be the alternator. Replaced it for $130 and was able to keep my current battery

this

when you turn your car over what does the battery meter read

a healthy charge should be 13 and higher voltage

voltage showing anything less than 12 means the alternator/sarter isnt charging the battery

my truck was doing the same a few weeks ago, got a new battery (under warranty)  but the same issue kept going on...replaced the starter.
