**LA LAKERS THREAD** Sitting on 17! 2023-2024 offseason begins

Don't start breaking things in your house if this happens tomorrow:
Wow, I'll get the bubble wrap ready.

Really appreciate the heads up man. I mean, I hate the trade... but at least we've given appropriate notice of this impending trade. Thanks, Whip.
I wouldn't discount the fact that Magic and Jeanie have been speaking with Kobe A LOT the last few weeks. Not that I'm saying Kobe would have any major influence in the personnel decisions Magic would make, but Kobe and Melo have been very good friends the last decade or so and I wouldn't ignore the huge possibility that Kobe has reached out to Melo a couple of times this season.

I also wouldn't put it out of the realm of possibility that the Paul George to LAL rumor that made headlines today was nothing but a diversion done to take any kind of media attention away from any Carmelo-related trade news as the deadline approaches and for all intents and purposes has been strenuous on both Carmelo and the Knicks organization.

Just sayin.

And here's the thing....

As I mentioned weeks ago, even with Melo and Jennings on the Lakers, we wouldn't improve drastically enough to all of a sudden go on winning streak after winning streak and take the Lakers out of the running for that coveted top 3 pick. The Lakers would still be bad enough (at least for the remainder of this season) to make a solid run at a bottom 3-5 record because they're so far back in the standings that it's almost too late for them to recover.

Thus, the Lakers would get the best of both worlds. They make a move to acquire a star player, and still have a solid shot at keeping their top 3 pick. This satisfies a multitude of things as the offseason approaches. Having Melo on the roster would be more attractive for upcoming UFA's because it signals to free agents that the Lakers are serious about winning NOW. Secondly, the Lakers would then possess that all-valuable trade chip (top 3 pick) PLUS another first rounder to dangle PLUS an expected $22+ million in cap space to acquire and trade for another big-time star or two.

On the flip side, if the Lakers stand pat and do nothing...all they can do is hope and pray they luck out with a top 3 pick and hope even more that Randle and DLo somehow turn things around drastically next year and turn into All-Star caliber players, whose chances of it happening imho, is....as Chick Hearn used to put it "slim and none"

If Lakers management really had a ton of faith in DLo, Clarkson, and Randle they wouldn't be ultra aggressive in trying to make moves to acquire an All-Star prior to the deadline. The fact that they have been making a concerted effort to trade for Boogie, PG13, Butler, etc...should let you know that at least 2 of their "young guns" are definitely expendable because they believe none of these guys will turn out to be the type of leader that can put this team on his back en route to a serious playoff run.

Y'all still entertaining this nonsense

Ain't nothing more nonsensical than purposely tanking with a bunch of scrubs on the roster, while praying you'll land a top 3 pick with having barely above a 40% chance to do it.

If you thought DLo was lazy and soft...Okafor has that same attitude and at times could be worse.

Y'all still entertaining this nonsense :smh:

We just traded Lou (our leading scorer)
Currently out here trying to trade NY who is shooting 41% from three ....so losing more scoring
Recent quote from Luke

We have the 3rd worst record in the league, only .5 game ahead of PHX (2nd worst) who will be a better(should have been better to begin with ) than us for the rest of the season

Team tank is gonna tough to watch, but it's what we need to happen

I'll turn in my fan card if that happens. That's disgusting

Id be out here like @rck filling out new fan applications in the NBA thread

Don't buy into the kobe/Melo talk
Yes they talk, talk about basketball, talk about Phil
Kobe also talked Melo out of coming to LA as a free agent iirc...

@ESPNSteinLine
Toronto's big Deadline Day decision, of course, is whether to finally surrender a first-rounder (likely with Jared Sullinger) for PJ Tucker.

Sully & 2nd for Brewer

DO IT EARVIN

With Thibs so hellbent on making a bad trade for Derrick Rose...

Time to get the old Luol Deng & Thibs reunion back on track so he can finally kill him like he tried to before...

Deng + Marcelo Huertas + 2017 Lakers (2nd if we keep it) + 2018 Denver 2nd + 2019 Bulls 2nd
-for-
Nikola Pekovic & Brandon Rush
