**LA LAKERS THREAD** Sitting on 17! 2023-2024 offseason begins

We can't hit the draft again... that pick HAS to be flipped for sonetgung proven this year. just not enough hands to mold and develop all those prospects especially on the wing. Like I said before, I honestly think the team is in over their heads as is with the 7 guys we have now to develop.

There's something to this...

There's the benefit of having them as the starting point for the team you want to build because they are cheap, and allow you to put top tier talent around them, and hopefully create a monster.....

Then there's the point when your prospects are 5-6 years in, so let's say 2020-2022... You've added veterans in Free Agency to fill holes, and round out the team.... You now use your picks you have to keep the wheels going, so there isn't an all of a sudden death of the franchise when you can't add anything salary wise anymore for a while.

But in all honesty, I think the next couple of drafts could be the opportunity to go after the Home run trade...

The only problem is, there's only 1 of them in the NBA that makes sense, and that is Jimmy Butler...

Paul George, Boogie Cousins, Gordon Hayward are FAs too soon enough that we can just try to let it play out, and take our chances in FA.. Every other guy is not available, or take far more than we should be willing to trade for.

If it isn't Jimmy Butler, then you pretty much would let the team build in a more natural way, and let the dice roll.


In terms of the prospects we have
Russell - Ingram (Untouchable under almost every circumstance... It'd have to be a 1 for 1 trade for like KAT for me to say yes, and that won't happen)
Randle (A lot of talent with some good versatility that you have to let it play out, and see if can smooth the edges of his game)
Zubac (Need to see what he can be. Have to have a better sample size)
Clarkson (The 3 years under control for under market value gives better trade value... Also could always chase a scoring bench player with MLE when we need it.. So he's borderline)

Nance Jr. (Great role player, but he's not a guy who will single handed ever win you games or a playoff series, and I'm pretty concerned about a team giving him a ton of money to steal him. Also concerned about injuries for him)
Black (can't afford him once he becomes a UFA in 2018... Not good enough to tie more cap into)

The Warriors are STACKED with stars (Curry, KD, Draymond, Klay) and the Spurs have Leonard, LA, Parker and Gino. If we have said "superstar" we can make the playoffs, but I don't see us competing to where we are favorites to come out of the west.

What if the Lakers get the top pick?

Pelton: Let's turn our attention to the Lakers. How do you think they would evaluate the two point guards and other prospects assuming the front office stays as it is?

Ford: This is an easier call for me. While D'Angelo Russell is having a fine sophomore season for the Lakers, his ceiling is considerably lower than that of either Fultz or Ball in my opinion.

Years ago the Blazers opted against drafting Chris Paul because they had a young point guard they really liked, Sebastian Telfair. That didn't work out so great for them. While Russell has more talent than Telfair did, the moral of the story is that you take the best talent available -- especially when you are a young rebuilding team like the Lakers.

As to whom I'd choose? It's tough. I love both Fultz and Ball. However, my personal favorite player in this draft is Ball, and I think the L.A. native would be a star for the Lakers. Russell could conceivably move to 2-guard and give the Lakers two 6-foot-5 ball handlers.

I think this is a slam dunk. Kevin?

Pelton: I agree the Lakers should take one of the point guards no matter what. So far, spot-up shooting has probably been Russell's best offensive skill (he's made 43.2 percent of catch-and-shoot 3s this season, per SportVU tracking data on NBA.com/Stats), so moving him off the ball wouldn't be the worst idea. And the size of Ball and Fultz makes it reasonable to play them alongside Russell defensively.

Like you, I'm intrigued by how Ball would fit in L.A. His unselfishness has been contagious for the UCLA offense and could help Luke Walton replicate the ball movement of the Golden State Warriors. Ball stands the better chance of unlocking the Lakers' other young talents and maximizing their potential.
