**LA LAKERS THREAD** Sitting on 17! 2023-2024 offseason begins

Not only did Jeanie just hire Magic, but Jeanie spent a good amount of time with Kobe last week. Even drove to OC to hang with Mamba.

What do you think this means? Kobe bout to be a team consultant as well? Kobe the GM? lol

I'll tell you one thing...it's no coincidence. There was a purpose for that meeting.

I don't think Kobe wants to be a GM. From what he said weeks back saying he was available for the team "a call away", he wants to focus on his passion. Not sure what he meant by that(story telling?)

it makes more sense than thinking changes are because of magic. dont kid yourself.

lets not forget this happened not so long ago

http://www.thescore.com/nba/news/1042250-magic-steps-down-as-lakers-vice-president

He stepped down in part because of the Dodgers and in part cause Jim was running the show and those two do not get along at all. The self imposed deadline, these leaks by Jeanie and the return of Magic all point to changes in the front office going forward.

Yeah I was just messin with the Kobe GM talk. He don't want none of that. But if the Lakers or Luke reach out to Kobe for help, one thing I think he can do is to light a fire under some of these nonchalant underachieving players. I bet Kobe is in great shape. I bet Kobe would love to go to practice with these kids, push them around a bit, and get in their face and instill some got dam toughness.

Luke initially may not have thought the "tough love" approach was a good idea, but it's about time Luke re-thinks it because this team is a flat out embarrassment to the game of basketball.

Haha alright. It's an entertaining thought though.

Yeah I remember Luke talking about that tough love approach on that interview but you're right. Hopefully Jeanie can get Kobe involved more with the team. They need that aggression.

These kids ain't ready for Kobe's honesty. At this point they need to be nurtured and their confidence built. There will be a time and place for Kobe's tutelage, that isn't now. Let them learn.

This is also true. He'd rip them a new one.

I bet Ingram is ready for Kobe. I bet Black can handle Kobe. I bet Zubac ain't trippin either. And I sure as hell know Clarkson won't be fazed one bit.

If you ain't "ready" to learn from an all time great and if "tough love" is too tough for you AS A PROFESSIONAL MAKING MILLIONS, then you need to get yo *** off the court and play ball overseas where the competition is as weak as you.

You gotta be weak minded as hell if you aren't able to handle tutelage from an all-time great at this level, and I don't care if you 19, 20, or 30 years old.

"Nurturing" happens when you playing in high school and college. This is a mf'n grown man's game. If you ain't ready to put on yo big boy pants, stay home.

And if you as a professional can't find a way to muster up some self confidence IN PRACTICE, then what the hell you gonna do when it's game time?!!

It ain't like Kobe gonna bust up yo' eye ya dig

Kobe will be needed when this team gets back to playoff status and need guidance on how to excel there. The coach is learning on the job too. It's fine for them to grow as a group.

Nah man...Kobe came into the league as a 17-year old and had to learn the HARD WAY from TOUGH Hard Nosed veterans like Shaq, Fox, Horry, Kersey, BScott and then Harper, A.C., Glen Rice, and Shaw when the Lakers had Phil 3-4 years after his rookie year.

Kobe has a ton of things to share with these kids because he was once in their position - a kid playing in a grown man's league.

It's much better to start now. By the time the Lakers are back in the playoffs, some of these young guys may no longer be on the team because in order to make the playoffs in the West, the Lakers will NEED A TIER 1 or TIER 2 star player.

You look at the top 8-9 seeds in the West and each team has a bonafide star-level player and if Kobe don't reach out to them now, none of these kids may ever turn out to be anything close to star quality.

The Lakers right now as it stands have a LOSING culture. Magic and Kobe and Luke are all proven winners. Lakers ownership is sick and tired of being doormats. The losing mentality has got to stop.

Jeanie is doing right by reaching out to Kobe to see what he thinks and evaluate how he can lend a helping hand.

Sure that's your take and it's fine, I wholeheartedly disagree and it seems that Luke agrees with me.

Luke agreed with you weeks ago. Just like weeks ago you thought the Lakers "brand" was a thing of the past and that the Lakers have to change the way they do things and "adapt.". LOL

Then what happened?

Magic gets hired to help realign Dr. Buss' formula and vision that's worked so successfully since Dr. Buss bought the team. And then Jeanie meets with Kobe that same week. Bet you'd like to know more about what was discussed in Jeanie and Kobe's meeting don't you?

Don't worry, when things start to come to fruition it'll hit you when you least expect it.

What the hell are you talking about man? Lakers brand was dead or has been with Jim at the top. Hence why they're moving in a different direction seemingly with Magic and hopefully Jerry West now to try and restore that luster in some capacity.

Even with Magic and Jerry, the parameters have changed, the CBA is far different than when they were here previously and we don't have a contending team anymore. They'll have to adapt their styles.

As for wanting to know about Jeanie and Kobe's supposed meeting I'm not taking your barbershop sources as anything other than lunacy.

okay buddy, whatever you say.

Winning changes everything. The Laker brand and mystique never left. Wake up.

Had we gone to the Finals with Howard, Nash, Gasol, and Kobe, you think the Lakers brand woulda been dead? You think free agents would not have wanted to come here the year after making the Finals with that group had it happened?

I'm not putting any loss on one player

He's just been alarmingly passive the past couple games, 2 games....6 shot attempts total......that's not ice in your veins

If we had been winning, sure it's probably still close to what it was. But guess what? We haven't. Hence it being dead, we can't even get meetings with the top guys anymore and it's gotten progressively worse every season. Losing plays a part no doubt, but so does the perceived incompetence of the front office and lack of direction from others. It's been reported on at nauseum.

Again, the reason we can't even get meetings with top guys is BECAUSE WE ARE LOSING!

You think Aldridge, Durant, Whiteside, heck even Pau Gasol want to go to a losing team? They'd all love to be Lakers.  But the problem is, going to the Lakers does nothing for their careers. High profile free agents want to win. And they didn't set up meetings here because we don't have a winning roster. Period.

The Lakers "being dead" is nothing but perception. The Lakers continue to be willing to spend tons of money. They continue to have the best facilities, the best environment to support successful players, and now they're building a brand new facility in El Segundo. They continue to have wait lists for season seats. They continue to sell out their luxury suites YEAR AFTER YEAR in spite of the lackluster rosters. What the hell you talking about their brand is dead.

It's all your silly perception just because we've been losing. Just because Jim Buss and Mitch have been perceived as incompetent doesn't mean the Lakers brand and mystique is dead LOL

So what would you say if Magic and Jeanie decide NOT to fire Mitch and next thing you know we're back in the Finals in 3-4 years with a revamped roster WHILE MITCH IS STILL AT THE HELM AS GENERAL MANAGER and in charge of executing the moves that got them a playoff contending roster, you gonna still think the brand is dead?

*ad nauseam

why does everyone make this mistake?
for the same reason people continue to make these ones:  would of, could of, and should of

You'd have a point of it was just the marquee guys. But even the middle and lower tier guys who necessarily aren't feeling the pressure to win. Which is why we've gotten stuck with the lowest on the totem poll from a personnel perspective. But I'm not going to argue this you the dude that still thinks players care about the weather and lifestyle like 75% of them don't already kick it out here in the offseason. Attendance numbers at staples and ticket prices have all declined slightly sans Kobe's retirement tour last season.

Oh best believe I'm gonna argue this with you all day long because you're dead wrong.

Middle and lower tier guys who aren't feeling the pressure to win? LOL...Isaiah Thomas, before he became MVP caliber wasn't "feeling the pressure to win", but he WANTED TO COME HERE. If the brand were dead, then why did Isaiah recently say he wanted to come to Los Angeles when he was a free agent? And other mid-tier guys like Moe Harkless, Evan Turner, D.J. Augustin, Bismack Biyombo, Ryan Anderson, Eric Gordon, Matthew Dellevadova, Ian Mahinmi, Rajon Rondo, Ish Smith, David West all signed with teams that are MUCH BETTER than the Lakers and better suited to make the playoffs. So yeah, it's safe to say mid tier players want to be part of a team who has the chance to win playoff games.

Once again, why did all of the above players I mentioned not want to come here even though we could've easily paid them their salaries? Because they'd be losing while playing alongside a bunch of 19 and 20-year olds. Doesn't mean our brand is dead because had we been winning, we'd have secured more free agents over the years.

Why do you think we overpaid for Deng and Moz? Because Mitch and Jim knew it was going to be extremely difficult to entice players to come to a losing team so their only chance to secure any free agent was to give them a deal they couldn't refuse aka throw money at em that no other team would match.

And just FYI, ticket prices have been "on sale" because there is NO MARQUEE PLAYER on the roster therefore the Lakers have to find ways to draw fans in to watch mediocre entertainment. Doesn't mean their brand is dead lol....if their brand was dead, you wouldn't see the Lakers on national tv on occasion and you would no longer see celebrities in the stands. You funny bro.

Oh btw...it's totem POLE, not totem poll lol
