Female Black Architect Humiliated When Seattle Bank Refused To Believe Her Paycheck Was Real

I really dont know why any questions were asked at all.
Just place the hold on the account if that is your policy and when it clears it clears.

I think the questioning was the unnecessary part that make it not ok.

. 2017 I will focus on a store too.

lots of reachin going on...that being said both sides could be correct in their assessment, what could have just been poor customer service could easily be (mis)interpreted as racism...just the same i could imagine if she were a similarly aged white folk, the situation may have been handled differently, even if the teller had made the same mistakes...and that is what makes these situations such grey areas

Tried to open a bank account with a black bank here in Nashville a few weeks ago.
They tried to hit me with 3X the deposit amount of other banks, had ALL KINDS of crazy tacked on fees for example $1/month fee for having/using my debit card
and a host of others I cant remember. And this would be with me using direct deposit. I said F that and walked out.

Went over to the white bank. No fees of ANY kind(of course except overdraft fees) and that icludes no ATM fees EVER. If I go to an ATM
that is different from my bank and get charged a fee, it is refunded back to my account each month. Free credit monitoring and a few other perks.

Point is, we have to do better as black businesses about offering a quality product. I am willing to pay a little more to a black business, to support my community, but the product or service has to be AT LEAST up to the industry standard. I wont pay MORE for worse service or lesser quality products.

funny thing isn't this always going to be the rub? established players can almost always offer more 'perks' due to economies of scale, the things you mentioned aren't really 'worse service,' it may just be the cost of doing business & perhaps you get a more personal product from them? you don't think those extra fees aren't a part of the premium that comes from just being a smaller bank? i'm definitely assuming, but i'd guess most black banks are a good deal smaller than most other banks/credit unions...

Standard practice or not, you can tell when someone is treating you like a criminal vs being informative. We know, we deal with this every day.

Some Nters just refuse to admit someone got **** worse then they do in life. It's bizarre to me

so the minimum then is the same day but only after you've been demeaned and humiliated and had to call them out on it correct?

The more i think about it this sounds like a white man who just couldnt believe/accept that a black person could legitimately have "x" amount of dollars

I bet what it was is she probably deposited like his whole year salary in one check and it got him upset

Prejudiced/bigoted/racist white people hate to see others, especially black people, doing as well or better than them
I mentioned Reg CC in my last post. But, here you go. I know you don't like doing homework so I'm posting the answer for you.

When first opening accounts or early in the accounts life ive had holds placed on funds for at least a few days. Now that i have been established there are still times where a hold is placed depending on where the check is from.

Yes. The way they went about it is not standard and if memory serves correctly violates several policies. First, it's the teller's responsibility to probe a large transaction right away if they are suspicious (new depositor, unfamiliar to that branch, etc). Second, why would they need her ID? If the name on the check is the same as the name on the account it doesn't matter.

Third, they can call the issuing bank and request verification of funds from the receiving account. NO need to call her back in. She didn't have to be none-the-wiser of any of this once she walked out.

Sounds like a bunch of keystone cops running that branch.

why does she emphasize being an architect....

like this situation wouldn't be that bad if they harassed a woman who just worked at a gas station

underrated post. but then again, it could be giving said deposit some context?

[thread="654645"]She deposited the check and then went about her business.[/thread]
[thread="654645"]They need to train their tellers when taking in large checks.  The bank should have questioned immediately. [/thread]

You call it demeaning, I call it due dilligence. You want them to release the funds for thousands of dollars to a new customer who they don't know. And had the check bounced they had it coming, right? Because asking questions about the origin of the check is demeaning, right?

:rolleyes

While I vibe with her, youll always be a ***** no matter what you accomplish..

Worked as a teller for a year and someone with a new account coming in with a large deposit is getting flagged immediately while their funds are held for verification. Standard procedure.

Unfortunately going to have to call this one a reach.

I worked in a majority white area, did it to a few dozen dudes myself. If it was a regular I wouldn't bat an eyelid but a new customer? Assumed sketch until proven otherwise.
