Female Black Architect Humiliated When Seattle Bank Refused To Believe Her Paycheck Was Real

You call it demeaning, I call it due dilligence. You want them to release the funds for thousands of dollars to a new customer who they don't know. And had the check bounced they had it coming, right? Because asking questions about the origin of the check is demeaning, right?

If funds haven't been held while a client is in the branch, a bank legally CANNOT hold the funds. They must do it while the client is there. Or if being done electronically, notify them before the check deposit is finalized.

It is within compliance to send a notification to the client within 24 hours that their funds are being held. Holds don't have to be placed at the time of deposit it's just preferred that way as a courtesy to the customer to avoid confusion.

In a situation like this, I always try to give the girl the benefit of the doubt. I've seen employees try to get away with some slick **** in banks, clinics, colleges etc etc. My understanding of how a bank works is not that strong, so I'll take y'all word on it that what they did was not the correct procedure.

I can very easily see this being a reach as well, but since there is no video and I wasnt there I won't call it that yet

Must have just been our bank's policy then. If the hold wasn't placed in the branch, it was coming back on our head.

Then again, we were very customer service focused and there are ways to verify funds too.

Worked at a branch for 5 yrs and managed it for almost 2 yrs...

She was racially profiled and it's obvious. The questioning, verifying employment etc. is blatant. If the acct was new and the amount was large then that's all that needed to be said from the get go.

Had a hold been placed afterwards by risk dept then it would make more sense.

Its crazy how small the black architect community is, my GF is on her way getting her licensed as well. She told me she was the only black female to graduate with an architect at WSU. I believe there's only 377 (378 soon) black licensed female and just over 1700 black male architects out there. Good luck on the tests!

Yup its a very tight knit community. In school we were in studios and I can say only 3 or 4 brothers and sisters made it out of the program including myself. Ive been trying to go to elementary schools and trying to get some into architecture.

One time I went to an elementary school and I had them draw houses that they would design/ buy for their mommas. They loved it! they were drawing mansions and pools and acres of land haha. The creativity is there its just the lack of black architects that they can meet and speak with. I hope to change that :pimp:

This is just business as usual as it pertains to the city of Seattle. I don't know why any self-respecting black person would live, visit, or grow-up in Seattle. It's simply not the place to be for US.

lots of reachin going on...that being said both sides could be correct in their assessment, what could have just been poor customer service could easily be (mis)interpreted as racism...just the same i could imagine if she were a similarly aged white folk, the situation may have been handled differently, even if the teller had made the same mistakes...and that is what makes these situations such grey areas
funny thing isn't this always going to be the rub? established players can almost always offer more 'perks' due to economies of scale, the things you mentioned aren't really 'worse service,' it may just be the cost of doing business & perhaps you get a more personal product from them? you don't think those extra fees aren't a part of the premium that comes from just being a smaller bank? i'm definitely assuming, but i'd guess most black banks are a good deal smaller than most other banks/credit unions...
Yes they are a smaller bank but they have been in business since 1904. And none of the other banks I checked out had half of the fees the black bank had.
I went to about 5 different banks that day comparison shopping. Even if they would've had the same amount of fees I would've went with them but they had the most fees out of them all. Fees I've never heard of before in my entire banking life. I'm happy with my white bank. I'll just have too find other ways to support my community.

Try sending a 100k+ wire transfer for the first time at a new branch being a 26yr old Mexican..

Minimum hour long interrogation.

Try sending two 500,000 wire transfers in a week beacuse the limit is 500,000 per day..
