Two straight years without a draft pick.
You're right it's not a good thing, but I do like the Tim Frazier trade. He performed well when given the opportunity over the course of the past two seasons. Much better backup PG than drafting a guy like Melo Trimble who they were working out.

Don't know anything about Frazier but the response has been generally positive. We'll see. Anyone but Jennings. And here I thought he was a nice consolation after missing out on Lou. Boy was I wrong...

Side note - Not surprised Melo went undrafted. Crazy how far his star has fallen. I think he was projected to go late in the first round after his freshman year had he declared. Had that horrible shooting slump his sophomore year. Basically forced to come back for his junior year and hope for a breakout season. He had a very solid bounce back year with some nice GWs but I guess it wasn't enough.

Hope he shows out in summer league and 76ers pick him up. They need guards. Gotta support a fellow Terp and PG product :pimp:

Here's why people are hopeful about Frazier:

March/April 2016

October/November 2016

I feel you on Melo, especially since you're a UMD alum. The potential's been there. Just don't think he'd be a good fit for the Wiz.

A few thoughts:
  • The Lakers just had to package the #2 overall pick from 2015 just to dump Mozgov's horrible contract.  Mahinmi was signed to a nearly identical deal.  How is Ernie Grunfeld still employed?

  • The Wizards have been bandied about as one of the teams engaged in trade talks for Paul George.  How?  What are they supposed to be trading for?  Porter's Bird rights?  We have no assets.  The Pacers are said to want young players and picks.  Oubre and a late first isn't getting it done.

  • The Trey Burke era is officially over.  Let's see how trading a second round pick to land a reliable backup for John Wall works out this year.

  • Better GMs than ours have been circulating this summer.  It seems clear that Ted is sticking with Ernie yet again.  Kompromat?

  • The Hawks have given up their pursuit of contention and will no longer be rivals for the Wizards in the Southeast.  I hope there's space for all these struggle championship banners.

Otto is gone.
They'll match.  Who else is out there?

Unlike the grotesque contracts issued during their disastrous, Dumars-like spending spree last season, overpaying Porter isn't likely to cripple the franchise.  Not one team would take Mahinmi's deal.  We've already established that there are at least 2-3 team that would gladly pay Porter the max.  Mahinmi is an immobile center in the era of motion offense and defensive switching.  Porter, on the other hand, is a player who can space the floor and defend multiple positions.  One has value in today's NBA.  The other does not.

If it's your ambition to try and land Cousins next summer, a sign and trade with Porter is probably your best bet.  If you let Porter walk and fill the void with fifth-rate players on smaller deals, that avenue is closed to you and you'll either need to sign your bench to one year deals (didn't work out so well when Ernie tried it in pursuit of Durant), or find trade partners who, for some unknown reason, want to take Jodie Meeks off your hands.  Signing Otto actually gives you more flexibility in the future due to his trade value.

My expectations for this franchise are so poor right now that I'd gladly overpay Otto knowing that, if they don't, Ernie will just waste the money on magic beans.  At least by paying for Otto now, you have a useful player on the roster for the next GM to work with.  We can't say that for most of Ernie's acquisitions over the years.

It's been a very disappointing summer thus far for Wizards fans.  Retaining Otto means that Bogdanavic will leave, and the only benefit we'll retain from yet another Grunfeld special will be the elimination of Nicholson's horrible contract.  Meanwhile, the Nets used what would've been our pick to draft a potentially serviceable big who will be signed to a rookie-scale contract, not $16 million/year.

Assuming Bogdanavic is gone - because I don't want to consider the possibility of management choosing him over Otto - who would you all like to see the team sign using the MLE?

Why this man not trying to sign that extension?
Can you really blame him?  The Rockets got Chris Paul.  The Celtics signed Gordon Hayward.  The Thunder nabbed Paul George.  The Timberwolves landed Jimmy Butler.

The Wizards' big offseason acquisition was Jodie Meeks.

Ernie couldn't wait to sign him, either.  It's like he felt he had to beat the rush.  Had he waited, he could've picked up a far more reliable player from a buyout situation, or he could've been active in trying to take advantage of another team's salary dump.

I'd initially thought they'd only used their bi-annual exception for him, but no - they blew their MLE on Jodie Meeks, who's played only 39 games in the last two seasons.

Honestly, John Wall has every right to hesitate.

Their glaring weakness last year was depth.  Wall made it clear he felt they needed help.  Instead, we lost Bogdanavic (predictably, I might add) and our big gets were Jodie Meeks and Tim Frazier.

This year will be the first time EVER that ownership will pay the luxury tax, and it's painfully obvious they won't spend on par with the top tier franchises.  As it stands, he's playing on a capped out team on which he's the only All Star.  The owner won't spend more.  Play the year out and see if Otto and Brad can grow into their contracts, or if you can recruit a superstar next summer.

Jodie Meeks and Frazier not gon move the needle much for the bench this year...at least they trying to bring some guys in but they aint it

John signs extension, Kyrie wants trade, Sessions thrown under the bus

Celtics messed up letting Bradley go.

I agree with both of these statements. The Cavs' impending destruction is great for Washington, but it's difficult to feel too optimistic heading into next season. Ernie continues to Ernie. You look at all the players who signed for the veteran minimum this summer, and the list of names still on the board, and it just becomes all the more exasperating for Ernie to have gone all in on Jodie Meeks and ensure that Washington would be completely irrelevant for the rest of the off-season.

There's been a fire sale for players looking to catch on with teams that have any hopes of title contention, and the Wizards have arguably the best young core in the East - especially now that Cleveland imploded.

To be sidelined practically all month has been torture.

It qualifies as progress only because Washington stood still while other rivals slid back.

That said, we routinely complain about the team's lackluster ownership, so it's nice to be reminded that things could be worse in that department.

The Cavs' new jerseys should be printed in Comic Sans.

Guaranteed that if Ernie stood pat, Jodie Meeks/Mike Scott would STILL be on the market right now. He jumped the gun, and although I don't know off hand who else we could have targeted, I can't shake the feeling that Ernie could have done much better than those two.

Also, REAL happy for Wall. Dude loves being here and truly embraces the city. He's not an embarrassment like Gil and is everything we could hope for in a star player. I just hope that Otto makes a big leap in his development. IF that can happen and the bench is better than what we saw last year, there is no reason for this team not to win 50+ games. Of course health willing.

Good to see our core is secured for the next several seasons. The Cavs reign seems to be coming to an end quicker than I expected with this Kyrie nonsense. Still hate the moves to “improve” the bench then again don’t know what could have been done with the limited cap space we had anyway. We just gotta accept that this bench is gonna be sorry until even MORE future draft picks are just traded away for vets smh. It’s clear that’s Ernie’s only strategy going forward

The Wizards waited weeks to announce that their new uniforms are practically the same as the old uniforms, but with a rubber swoosh nobody asked for.

Basically, it's the Wizards' offseason in a nutshell.

They're saving the "reveal" of their home and road alternates (I'm not using Nike's ridiculous buzzword naming convention, which has no descriptive meaning whatsoever) for a future date. I expect the "stars and stripes" uniforms from last year to serve as the home alternate. The fourth jersey is supposedly a "retro" one, likely a sleeveless variation of the horrible Baltimore Bullets uniform remix they wore at times last season.

No Capital One or Etihad Airways logos yet, so that's something.
