Ez guys

I’m new here so apologies if this has been covered before. I did a search and couldn’t find anything.

How do I go about painting the sole and midsole of a Nike air max 90?

I’ve been using Angelus paint but it just scrapes off. Everyone else seems to use it though.

I’ve tried all kinds of different ways and nothing seems to work. Firstly I just tried paint, then mixing it with sole bright. Then I got some raleigh restorations scratch resistant sealer and followed the instructions in this video to the letter but it’s just not working.

I actually did that last one twice, once with sole protectors [but anywhere without the pvc would scratch] and then once again just to test how weak they were.

What are you guys doing to get the paint on the to be durable. Is there a better paint to use? Is it just a case of getting the technique right? or is it just not actually possible to do

As for the MIDSOLE;

Every direction from Raleigh restorations video should be good, make sure the base is rubbed off with 100% acetone or even better Raleigh Restorations "midsole stripper" which works in about 15 mins. It is VERY important that the base is rough as this will either hold up your repaint or not.

How many layers are you putting? I suggest even more than 15 layers of PAINT/SEALER as suggested maybe 20 in your case. The layers DO NOT have to be heavy, light in between and make sure each layer dries before working on the next.

As for the SOLE;

other than a sole protector nothing can protect your sole from the friction of stepping on the ground. UNLESS your sole is icy/clear then yes the solebrite idea would work, possibly white as well but not much you can do.

Hope this helps

Thanks for your reply, I'll bear it in mind for the mid sole part next time.  It seems its all in the technique and I've not quite got it yet. Actually parts of the midsole though seems to be OK, it was the sole that was the problem but I think I'll just give up trying to do that.

One part I did want to paint though is the front toe part which folds up and I actually found a way to do it, by mixing a few parts glue and 1 part water and painting the area lightly a few times it will go solid. I then sanded it lightly to make it rough and painted it in the way you mentioned. It seems to be working at the moment but we'll see.

Luckily for the ones I'm trying to do, I've actually found a pair of 90s with the soles and most of the other difficult parts already in the colour I want so I'll just get those and modify the rest.

I'll post some pics once they're done
