Was replay a bad idea for the NFL? Is there a commercial problem?

In hindsight, was this really better for the game?

I could have clumped this into the NFL thread, but screw it...@dland24 was onto something about the lumps of posts into one conglomerate of a thread and trying to have a rationale discussion in between...I prefer this, but I digress...

The NFL reality is multiple camera angles on top of the knowing-ness, if you will, of replay capabilities, so it magnifies every single flag/no flag to a point where every single play is scrutinized by one fanbase or the other....We all post what we see on NT, facebook or any other social medium and it builds momentum up to the point of "the NFL has an officiating problem."

Is the NFL profit from the extra commercials a real benefit to them even though it detracts from the consumer?

There's grumblings of the NFL reducing the "TV timeouts," but what does that mean and what does it take for us to "comply" with a satisfactory amount to keep both sides happy?

I'm not sure how I feel about replay as a whole, but adding more to what can reviewed is not of any interest to me...Bascially, forget it. I have no interest and half of it is because I don't want anymore stoppages of play that coincide with commercials (the other half is the human element argument).

Commercials? Eliminate the TV timeout after kickoffs, for one. They do so after the start of every game...No need. $$$ I know, but here we are at what may be the point of diminishing returns for the NFL.

What say you?...

Hell yeah. Makes it hard to watch considering all the TV timeouts. What makes it even worst is that they seem to last forever.

I'm still in favor of staggered start times a la the NCAA tourney. I've expressed this before with some others, but ultimately, It's going to cut out the commercial time because viewer's will end up just switching channels to the live action and the incentive for the League is in the actual game play. Maybe it's the business model and not adapting, but it's pretty ridiculous and we have no choice.

It still makes no sense that you watch an entire scoring play or turnover and they cut to a commercial, but when they come back, "the previous play is under review." What?! What the hell were ya'll doing the last 3 minutes then? Obviously, not a damn thing, but talk about dead time...:smh:

NFL is unwatchable to me because of all the damn commercials. There's no reason a game should take 3-4 hours to finish. I'm not a lazy fat @#$ like the typical middle American NFL viewer; I have other things to do. It's a problem with American sports in general, but NFL is by far the worst

In all seriousness though, is that the real reason you don't watch football?

We can agree on the time it takes to complete a game and that it can be shortened, to sum up your approximation. I don't agree with the middle America comment...That social class makes up a huge percentage of the American population, so naturally it makes up a large amount of the viewership, but football is not exclusive to one social class over others. Ethnicity, yes...but I do not buy that heartland USA or all blue collars across all states are the only demographics that are willingly tuning into the NFL and/or involved with capitalizing on its marketing power in some form or the other.

I sense an inherent disdain from your post, but I won't dismiss it...I see where you're coming from, but where are the other angles of gambling, fantasy sports and a business tool for sales or an entrepreneurial facade? When you bring those into play, suddenly it's not just a fat persons waste of time -- it's an investment, let alone the millions of "die-hard's" that are strictly just fans.

It's a multi-billion dollar enterprise...I don't think it's as simple as you put it.

Co-sign

SNF & MNF are tolerable only because I watch all regular Sunday games on RedZone.

do ppl still sit through their sundays to watch football from AM to PM?
don't think i've watch one gm from beginning to end or even left the tv on for the full duration.
there's just too much "dead" time with commercials. TD, FG, go to commercial, kickoff, go to commercial, etc :x

nfl should be thankful for fantasy football, gambling, etc.
