Does EBay have any seller protection ??

So I sold my iPhone 6 on eBay almost two months ago now. The guy who won had a profile that said he lived in the United States but he actually lived in Ukriane and asked me to ship it to Ukraine. It seemed sketchy, but he had 100% feedback and paid for the item.

I shipped it out October 4th, I have the customs number, I did not get tracking because he did not pay the extra 60-70'it would have cost for tracking internationally. Now he's claiming he never got it and filed a claim. Is there anything I can do or am i screwed ?

Hmm, interesting.

Did you process the shipping label through eBay? That could be proof.

Still have the receipt for shipping the phone out? I know it's two months ago, but maybe there's a chance?

I do still have the receipt with the customs number as well as the customs form.

They say they do. But it's BS. I don't trust eBay or PayPal with my $ at all. The buyer will always win.

You're pretty much screwed. That's like the oldest trick in the book, you only ship to paypal confirmed addresses. And there's no tracking info...definitely done for.

You are scrwaed 100%

No tracking means you or PayPal can't see if it was delivered or lost or anything

You will lose 100%

While international shipping can be expensive, an iPhone is rather small package, you could have ate the probably small extra cost and paid for the slightly better with tracking service which USPS does offer on lower tier internationl shipping

from my experience, eBay bases 99% of their cases on tracking. If there's no proof of delivery, the buyer gets his money back...even if the package gets lost in the mail.

If you're selling international, the only 100% coverage you'll get is from the Global Shipping Program. You ship the item to ebay's international shipping center and they send your stuff overseas. The buyer and seller will be refunded if something goes awry after ebay ships your item, and you only pay for local shipping if you offer free shipping.

Most people don't really know the ins and outs of international shipping, even domestic for that matter, so let me break it down. Actually, the customs number is basically a tracking number. You can enter it online and it will show delivered if it was delivered. Now if you are sending to a 3rd world country or somewhere that doesn't have scanning tools it might not show up as delivered but you can still track the progress. 95% of the time the customs number is good for tracking internationally.

Unfortunately for OP, if the item costs over $250 (including shipping costs), which I am assuming it did, tracking is not good enough. You need signature confirmation. Even if this guy lived in the US and there was tracking info that showed it was delivered he could still say he didn't get it and ebay would side with the buyer and refund him. The item has to be signed for if it is over $250 no matter where it's going, period.

The funny thing is USPS does not even offer signature confirmation outside of the US. There is no amount of money you can pay to get them to guarantee an item is signed for upon delivery. UPS or Fedex may offer that service to SOME international locations but it will literally cost you $100-$200 for that depending on where it's going. And I doubt Ukraine is one of those places.

Also, never send to a different address than the one listed on ebay/paypal. Thats a red flag right away if they ask to send to a different address than the one they have listed. Have them add the address to their account before paying if they need it sent somewhere else for some reason. Because even if OP had managed to get signature confirmation to Ukraine somehow, if that address wasn't listed as his shipping address it would be the same outcome.

As for OP, yes you are screwed. You can file a claim with the post office and get the shipping costs back and there is usually some amount of insurance money you can get as well but USPS doesn't always honor their insurance claims. If its a lot they will try to find reasons to deny your claim. Your other option is to be very nice to the people at ebay, sometimes they will offer a "one time" courtesy reimbursement for situations like this, it has to be authorized by a supervisor. I would wait until you loose this case, appeal it, then speak to a supervisor in the appeals department and see if they will be kind enough to cover you. Make sure you are speaking with a supervisor though. It's pretty much up to the person if they feel like doing it for you or not.

I knew someone was gonna mention the customs number thing counting as tracking, maybe in the past and some countries but I don't think it gets updated or used much because I made the same mistake as OP some odd years ago because I didn't wanna shell out a ton which it really was a lot before they had all these different options and tracking with everything now

The customs number never updated of course

ALSO they changed it from $250 to $750 for the signature confirmation. So anything $749 and under can be sent with just tracking.

Either way when it's over $250 I still send with signature majority of the time

Cosign on this. GSP is the way to go for Intl packages.

Still tho, if a buyer asks to ship to a address that doesn't match the one on the order conf. cancel it, relist and tell them to repurchase. Not worth the headache if something goes awry.

They tried this with me,

The first time it was for over a g so i just refunded and told them to EAD.

The next time it was for less so I just ignored them and shipped to the address on file LOL

Sure enough they opened a case, but I buy signature confirmation on all my items so someone signed for it...

Ebay / Paypal should refund you based on ethics alone

But it's not going to happen... technically you shouldve shipped to the us address

THIS IS WHY YOU SHOULD ONLY USE THE EBAY PRINT SHIPPING LABEL INTERFACE because it protects you as LONG AS YOUR ITEM IS BEING TRACKED by the shipping company.

for new sellers who arent able to have funds available right away... they can still use this feature.

NEVER SHIP TO AN ADDRESS OTHER THAN WHATS ON FILE WITH EBAY / PAYPAL

Btw it could take months for an item to get through customs

Customs number updates as tracking still. I should mention it has to be the big customs form, priority mail international. The small customs form/fist class mail is a little trickier. Sometimes it updates and sometimes not. I send international packages on a weekly basis. Depends on where its going I guess to. Anywhere in western europe, canada and even russia it will for sure update.

And I don't think that is correct about $750 being the new number. I don't think thats across the board, maybe in some categories.

The problem with GSP is that it is sooo much more expensive for the buyer that you will likely not get many or as many sales as you would otherwise. You list something with the GSP like an iPhone for say $500 Buy It Now, when the seller sees your listing it isn't gonna say $500 BIN. It will have shipping and customs fees added to the selling price they see. So maybe $30-$40+ for shipping and another $150-$250 for customs depending on the country. Your buyers will see BIN $750 or something, your item will be much more expensive than most other similar items listed in their search results and they will not even look at your auction.

They tried this again with me!!!

I told them go to your old address and wait for it LOL!!!

I shipped that sucker EXPRESS MAIL TOO... you know they're really mad when they refuse the packages.... The tracking says that they refused the package.... so it's being returned (USPS HATES THIS)

That's why you always get Signature confirmation, because that will show up in the status.

I would win a case through Ebay = EASY

Through Paypal I'm technically winning a case if it's open, but Paypal is more judicial than ebay when it comes to seeing if the item has been returned, they go against their policy.

But once you're in good with Paypal, you can close cases if all they see is some shipment happen. LOL!!

It is, they changed the threshold about a year or so back. Call up PayPal and ask

Still doesn't mean you should ship without it. I still ship with signature once it's over $300 regardless just so people don't try to chargeback or something stupid to claim they didn't get it

U prolly out of luck if u shipped to a different address than the one he purchased with. You can try and provide the customs number but without the tracking number, they might rule in favor of the buyer.

If tracking doesnt say delivered then you are SOL

Never sell outside the country. NEVER EVER

Signature confirmation and/or insurance is for your own safety, not the buyers'

Only been played on eBay 1 time as a seller. I sold dude my old glasses frames. Joints were obviously bent outta shape. I posted hella pics and all that and dude still copped. 2-3 days after confirmed delivery I get a message saying "I m all set" from dude. I tried interpreting the message for like a week, then came to realize he is ******ed and was trying to say he was *upset*. He requested a refund, I refunded and dude never sent back my $9 glasses
