Dead Malls aka When malls were poppin'...

Only been there like twice but Greenspoint Mall is just as dead as West Oaks Mall is. More open stores which I guess is a plus but literally no one is there shopping.

I’ve always heard it was a place to avoid back in the day but thought it would be more populated than that.
I went to Almeda Mall a couple months back to get some Chinese food on my break, and not only was it gone, but the entire space where the restaurant was was totally removed, like it never existed

2018 Mexico:

The Artz Pedregal mall opened in March, though parts remain under construction. It had drawn the ire of neighbors worried about the loss of open space, congestion and other issues. Built on the edge of the city’s main expressway, the mall had suffered previous subsoil slides.

Mexico City mayor José Ramón Amieva said the collapse occurred in an area of offices, and experts were investigating whether the collapse of the cantilevered area was due to structural defects or soil settling.

“They noticed that a separation was occurring” between the overhang and the rest of the building, Amieva said of the hours before the collapse.

The mall’s operator said in a statement that it notified city authorities when it noticed signs the area was collapsing. It said it regretted the impact the accident was having on traffic on the notoriously crowded Periférico expressway. At least two lanes were closed.

The mall was controversial in part because it threatened to clog traffic, and because it was built near a rain catchment basin that serves to regulate the city’s seasonally heavy rainfall.

The risk posed by substandard building has been a longstanding issue in Mexico City, where many poorly built or designed buildings collapsed in the city’s 1985 and 2017 earthquakes, both of which occurred on 19 September.

The city also has notoriously bad subsoil conditions, and developers often build on unstable land.

This is a cool coincidence that this thread exists because I posted something about malls being in decline in America to the point that many will close in years to come in "The thread about nothing..." thread months ago. I really didn't know this thread dedicated to the discussion of dead malls or malls in general existed until a moment ago.

I started this thread six years ago. Malls are still going downhill.

Right, it will be a formality with many malls closing down in the next several years. Malls peaked in the '80s but seemed to have went progressively downhill after the '90s. The steady decline has been going on since the 2000s.

I recall back then when malls had 50% corporate stores and 50% mom and pop stores occupying them. Some even had mostly mom and pop stores occupying them way back then. But the mom and pop stores have been mostly phased out in malls for several years now due to exorbitant rent. It's been predominantly corporate stores occupying them for a long time now.

I don't know if it's necessary malls closing, it's certain types of malls. Nobody wants to go to just a stand alone mall anymore. They want a shopping complex with many other amenities around it. Also when there's a different mall on every side of town, of course most will eventually fail. There's 4 malls in my city. 3 are dead, 2 of those 3 are closing with one already in bankruptcy protections but the 4th built bout 20 years ago with not just the mall but many other shopping, eatery, and business around it with outdoor spaces is poppin.

They want the shopping experience plus other experiences. That new giant mall in Jersey, forgot the name but it has like a water park and a small amusement park in it, next to it has that indoor ski thing. Activities help, do some shopping too, eat, watch a movie. I always loved malls growing up, hope they still stick around.

American Dream Mall

My favorite malls in Jersey were Willowbrook Mall and Newport Mall. I know there's other malls, but I had to choose the ones that I got the most history with. The FYE at the Newport Mall was my spot to talk to girls. There was one incident at the Newport Mall that I didn't like, in 2005, some undercover cop started following me cause he probably thought I looked suspicious, based on my appearance latino male with a tall tee, baggy pants and a radio. Mind you I wasn't playing any music inside the Mall. I waited til I got outside to blast the music, and once I got outside I still saw him following me. Well he saw I wasn't doing anything illegal and then he bounced.

They knocked down my local mall and turned it into an Amazon warehouse

The death of the American mall is one of the saddest tragedies in recent history. It's obvious why they died out but still sad to think of it happening.
