‘Aquaman’ Scribe Will Beall Diving Into Universal’s ‘Creature From The Black Lagoon’

Universal Pictures has set Will Beall to write The Creature From The Black Lagoon, from an idea Beall had to revive the classic 1954 film as part of the studio’s classic monsters franchise. Beall just scripted another underwater event movie, Aquaman, which James Wan is directing with Jason Momoa in the title role for Warner Bros and DC. Beall also exec produced Training Day, the CBS series transplant of the hit movie. After the untimely death of series star Bill Paxton, that series is going to wind down and end after the network broadcasts the 13 episodes that were completed. Beall, whose breakthrough came with Gangster Squad, has worked on a string of Warner Bros projects that include The Legend of Conan, the latter of which is being produced by Chris Morgan. Morgan and Alex Kurtzman are producing Creature, and they are the architects of Universal’s Monsters Universe. That program starts June 9 with the release of The Mummy, which Kurtzman directed and stars Tom Cruise, and had a rousing presentation at Cinemacon this week.

Creature has long been under development at the studio, going back to when it was shepherded by Gary Ross, whose father co-wrote the original. That horror classic focused on a group of scientists on an expedition through the Amazon who discover a human-fish hybrid. Julie Adams played the leading female role of Kay Lawrence, and her portrayal helped define the scream queen genre. There are several roles that will likely draw big stars. CAA and Management 360 rep Beall.

Getting that money. I don't blame him.

Hope they fit my boy Dorian Gray in to this even though he aint a monster (I mean if the Invisible Man is involved might as well make this the League of Extraordinary Gentleman).

Last one is Dracula or Van Helsing.

I think Tom Cruise either becomes the Mummy or Van Helsing at the end of the film, from the trailers he seems to have gotten some powers or became immortal or something.

It would at least make sense as to why Tom so far seems the only one to be cast as a nobody.

Sidenote, its funny looking at that pic in the op and realizing Tom is the only guy not in a suit rocking that black tee

Phantom of the Opera and Hunchback of Notre Dame join Dark Universe

While the Bride of Frankenstein actress has not been announced, the studio did reveal that Johnny Depp and Javier Bardem, who appear together in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, will star as The Invisible Man and Frankenstein’s monster, respectively, in the shared universe. They are joined by Tom Cruise as soldier of fortune Nick Morton and Oscar winner Russell Crowe as Dr. Henry Jekyll, who lead the all-star cast of The Mummy, along with Sofia Boutella, the actress who embodies the title role in that film.

Now, talking with Fandom, Kurtzman has shared more characters that will be joining the Dark Universe. “We know we’re going to do Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Dracula, Creature from the Black Lagoon, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame, Invisible Man,” he says.

He added: “There are characters within those films that can grow and expand and maybe even spin off. I think that digging into deep mythologies about monsters around the world is fair game for us, as well and connecting the monsters that we know to some surprising monsters could also be really interesting.”

And which other actors would he like to bring into the fold? “I’d love to bring Michael Fassbender in, I’d love to bring Jennifer Lawrence in, I’d love to see Charlize Theron in there, Angelina Jolie…” Jolie has often been mentioned as the favorite to play the Bride of Frankenstein, but we’ll have to wait and see.

At its organizing principle, Dark Universe films are connected by a mysterious multi-national organization known as Prodigium. Led by the enigmatic and brilliant Dr. Henry Jekyll, Prodigium’s mission is to track, study and—when necessary—destroy evil embodied in the form of monsters in our world. Working outside the aegis of any government, and with practices concealed by millennia of secrecy, Prodigium protects the public from knowledge of the evil that exists just beyond the thin membrane of civilized society…and will go to any length to contain it.

Wow they really going in.

I want to see the werewolf done right.

Am I the only one who was a huge fan of Van helsing. Man I loved that movie.

I liked it and Jackman fit the role and I am never mad to see Beckinsale on the big screen

I didn't even mind Del Toro's Wolfman either, Dracula Untold was bad but that's because they went a bit too scifi with it

the Mummy comes out this week though and I think the reviews are still on embargo so I am a bit concerned since it's estimated weekend BOs only in the $40m to begin with
