Replace friends and titanic with iPhone and Facebook and I agree. Also just change WiFi to Internet. The main thing that came to my mind when 7 entered the thread was the oj case.
You could also argue that the trayvon Martin case could be an honorable mention.

Imo, to make the list, it has to be something immensely popular, basically something that literally everyone knows about and/or hold a strong opinion on. Something that transcends race and cultures.

Gangs definitely in the 90s. Not on a criminal view point. But more of a social gathering. First time you would see groups come together in a long time. They even shut down the mafia.

The public's fascination with gang culture has only grown stronger since the '90s. Considering gang members were responsible for both Pac and Big's deaths, it can go either way.

I agree with reality TV and the financial crisis being up there too.
