How do you remember peoples names?

I use to be excellent with names. I was just sharp there. You told me your name and I'd remember it even if you were a forgettable person. Didn't matter if it was a common name like John, Chris or Melissa.

I will say it's even easier with females though.

But time is a ************ :smh: I catch my *** trying to remember ppl - who somebody has already said - aren't frequently in my life and have earned me remembering their name. I can't remember names of some chicks I smashed in college. I be lost on facebook  :smh: Had to set up a whole new name and picture system for females. Any dudes I use to know I forget, oh well.

If it's work related, even harder when for networking.

New ppl it just depends, when and how I met them, how I was feeling. Also their voice and personality.

I repeat a name at least 3X in my head when we greet. I'll compliment you on something random and why you'll look I'll repeat it another 3X. Then end convo stating your name.

I'll associate somebody famous or somebody I already know with the same name as a way to remember a new person. For example, when meeting somebody for the first time by the name of Tom, I'll just think of Tom Cruise and that person starts to click in my head as Tom Cruise whom I already have stored in my memory. It helps if they also have the same physical features as said famous/already known person. It gets tricky when you meet people from other countries because those names aren't as common as American names. It takes some getting used to but I find this way very helpful.

Im usually good with names however if i do forget...

a dudes name, i just say whats good bro

a girls name, i just try to be slick with it to find out her name

I'm the worst with this. I hate small talk and social mixers/networking events. I'm typically not interested in getting to know the people but it's expected. As soon as they say their name, I forget it, mainly because I feel like I won't ever need to know it again.

Coincidental that this topic comes up bc I was thinking about this video earlier where this guy learns and repeats the name of an audience. Very impressive... I also remember something similar, a guy was practicing for Memory competition and he had to remember the order of a deck of cards. I remember him saying that he had to imagine an empty room and for every card, he'd have to come up with some bizarre act that taking place in that room. My short term memory is crap though. I need to work on it.

Not hard to remember names of people you interact with regularly, increased activity with said person makes it easier to remember, unless you're a jerk. I always found this commercial hilarious...

All I can think of is someone doing this in the most awkward and obvious way

people skills my friend. All about rapport building. 6'2 and used to be 320 with long bushy hair and tatts. MF would be scared of my presence. Had to learn to kill em with kindness

I remember watching something where a guy was remembering the cards in the deck too. His method was to put whatever you're trying to remember whether its a place or a name or anything else for that matter, on a "hook" and anchor it to something you can easily access in your memory. Basically the same thing that BR0 MONTANA BR0 MONTANA was saying. If your name is David you will have no problem remembering someone whose name is Davis because of the similarities. Its called a Mnemonic device, which I didn't know was the actual term until that Key and Peele episode when they are trying to remember where they parked. It definitely helps tho.

Another thing I learned is when they are telling you their name makes sure you are looking at their face when repeating it in your head or creating your device, especially if its in a setting where you're meeting multiple new people at one time.

This video can explain all the different ways of using these mnemonic devices

I put name tags on they ***ties so I don't get they names wrong, screaming game on.

first name and nearest largest city to where they grew up...

joe baltimore
timothy dc
mitchell new york
and so forth...
This me but I will remember the person from their city before their name. Just have to get me the impression it's worth me remembering your name. I may not see you again.

I've tried those tricks with trying to associate their name with something but without fail, I still can't get it right.

Do you think it's better to confidently say their name incorrectly, or ask again/wait until someone says it.

I feel with the confidence approach, if it comes out strongly, some people wont even correct you

If I'm still standing there with the person and forgot their name as I'm talking, I find its better to just say,
"I'm sorry, can you tell me your name again? I'm really bad with names. i usually have to hear it 3 times before I remember it"
They will tell you again and you have set it up where if you forget you can ask one more time.
Each time try to associate it with something but make sure its something outrageous.

For example if the person's name is Harry. Then I would think something like Harry and the Hendersons, dude got a hairy body, that's hairy body Harry.
It doesn't have to make sense, just be memorable.
