I've never owned any type of pit, but I've had friends who have had them. They were always the most chill dogs I've been around. Didn't beg for food like my lab, just chilled. Not to say all are like that. But in this situation, they were obviously aggravating the dog trying to put the sweater on it, I'm sure the dog was just trying to get away from them at first because it didn't like it, and the people probably kept at it and really aggravated it.
I don't think, given the situation and the unknowns, the dog shouldn't be put down. But that's just me

Most people dont know how to handle them.

dog has to go down not because it defended itself from the sweater but because of its inability to be calmed or stopped once the attack started. if a child on the street is attacked and 3 people and a stab to the neck and a taser is not enough that child will probably die

As much as I like and enjoy the company of dogs, I couldn't imagine owning a Pit. We could talk in circles about the dog's training or temperament, but the fact of the matter is that they, like humans while we're at it, can be unpredictable.
Even with a lesser dog, I'll have the machete on deck at the crib just in case. If stabbing and bean bag shots don't cut it, a chopped tail or limb should, no?

That's not gonna happen unless the dog chooses to let go.
If that ever happens (for any dog for this matter) you grab it by the neck and you choke it, block the airway.
Perfect example in this video, people were throwing huge bricks at it, beating it with a bat... ect.

Nah not really, as you can see from OP, usual instincts is to hurt/kill the the dog for it to let go.

Mixed-breed dogs are more unpredictable than pure breed. My mother in law had a pitt for 10+ yrs before she died, and only thing she didn't like was the mailman 
Other than that, she was sweetheart and was not aggressive at all.
