Because stain is in cursive and stein is in print. The publishers/distributors for the tapes probably messed up thinking it was stein. Kids (at the time) talk about remembering it being stein because they didn't know how to read cursive at the time and only remember the print version.

And they tell you "No that was Kazaam with Shaq"

No, I don't remember learning about him in school. I did learn about him from watching the news and he was obviously alive since he was the president of south africa and they would briefly mention his story of imprisonment.
