La La Land (2016) starring Ryan Gosling & Emma Stone

Hope Zik doesn't mind me quoting him here, but I thought his comments were also true --
La La Land 5.5/8. If this was showing on tv just from the way it started I would've changed the channel but I pushed through it. No way I could've paid to see this in the theater. I at least now know where that golden globes opening came from with Jimmy Fallon.

I would've liked this movie a lot more if they took out most of the dancing and songs

Yeah I know, crazy *** critique for a musical but I feel this movie is just as good without it. Just as a simple romantic flick with some comedy. I dug all of the jazz stuff and the piano playing. That I loved. John Legend and his new age jazz sound was terrible though

I feel like all the singing and the spectacle of the performances is what's gonna set this movie over the top for other award shows and I don't feel it really earned that cuz it aint like the songs were that great. I hold back on this judgement until I see the other contenders though. It may just be that this is the best but I'm questioning that just off seeing Fences. Nothing about the story or performances left me like damn Gosling and Stone killed it. They were good but not amazing.

That ending though

That really soured me on this. I skipped past chunks of songs and this was still a long 2 hr movie. I was engaged in the story and for it all to lead up to that? Its like they tried to pull a 500 Days of Summer. Sorry you're not 500 Days of Summer b. Get back together like every damn romcom formula. Nobody digging this realistic ****.

Movie would've been a 6/8 if not for that awful ending

That **** was a gut punch. Had me like what the **** is going on? 5 years and you got a husband and a kid? While time I'm waiting for them to reveal the family is her acting in a movie and they were fooling the audience. I was on that even when they were in the car. Then they walk in to the club
indifferent.gif

Yall go off to pursue ya dreams and it's over like that? Yet if it wasn't for both of yall you would've been gave up on ya dreams. You owe each other and don't even try to get back together? **** outta here.

Don't mind at all. I was meaning to post in here same time.

I'd cosign wanting Emma's sugar walls after this. Especially when she was dancing in the club. I would've flooded hers.

I've peeped this movie twice. Better the second time around. When I first watched the ending, I wasn't a fan but it stepped out of the cliche "everybody goes home happy" mold and took the less obvious route and then gave some fan service by running through the alternate ending of what it could've looked like had they stayed together. I'm sure some people will make that their go-to of how the movie ends in their minds.

I don't think the movie was ever about their love story, I think that just happened enroute to what they both truly loved and was unwilling to sacrifice for. Hers being to make it as a movie star, his to open up his jazz club. In a perfect world, they get both of their dreams while still being in love (though, they weren't really compatible from the jump)

I'm not big on musicals besides Sound of Music, Singing in the Rain and some of Fred Astairs flicks but this movie was awesome to me.

Emma Stone cosign for sure

Love > Career as someone mentioned earlier, when it's all said and done, you can have all the money, fame, success and notoriety but if you lone-wolfing it, that void will get louder and louder. You need someone to balance you out throughout the ups and downs of all that.

Elaborate on this.

Do you mean her not liking jazz?

Yeah that's a big part of it I would think. Even when his sister tried to set him up with a girl she knew, she told him that the girl didn't like Jazz. The guy she was dating before Sebastian looked a lot like the guy she ended up married to and having that baby by.

A lot of the time throughout the movie, it seems like she's spending time watching him do his own thing. The performance before he gets fired by JJ, at the 80s party, the one club where she dances to him playing, and then at his show but he never sees her do her acting thing besides being at the one rehearsal where she eventually gets put on. He even misses her only gig while at that photo shoot. Yeah he drives out to tell her about the one casting call but I wonder if that was a bit out of guilt because he missed her show.

I mean I could be wrong. Not liking Jazz seemed like the biggest deal breaker though.

^ To be fair to her, when they argued at dinner, Seb calls her out on not liking jazz and she says that being with him made her come to love it.

I think she really did learn to like it, hence why she went to his club at the end.

I thought her husband proposed that idea though?

She threw me a bit at times. She also said she like the new music that she was doing but her facial expression didn't match that when she heard him play with John Legend? Or maybe it wasn't the music she expected...

Really would've liked to know what went down in those five years.

Loved goslings character. his determination with everything was great to watch. Does whatever it takes to make his dreams come true. Wants his woman to be happy? Sells out and joins a new-era jazz band. Woman isn't making her dreams come true? Pushes her harder and believes in her more than she believes in herself. Then when it comes to the simple task of traveling with him occasionally to see him on tour her response is, "in Idaho? This will never work. Let's break it off." She was so willing to give up on everything in her life it it was cool to see everything play out.

If you watch it closer, we never really get to know Mia.

By that, I mean that she's just reacting to the events in her life. Seb is the pusher/motivator and making things happen.

Do we ever really know as much about her as Seb?

No but I guess as far as interest the writer felt it'd be better explore Seb than her.

Mia was shown as the struggling wannabe actress. I assume with that template the writer assumes the audience is familiar with that. The back story we get after that is about her aunt and how she was motivated to act and had a dream. Other than that she's the typical young Hollywood chick going to parties with her thot friends, poor choice in bfs, has some taste in quality music, is a bit quirky, and is still finding herself.

That argument before the 3rd act was forced imo. She was right. The reason she reacted to him wanting to be in that wack band for years is cuz she knew he hated it and it wasn't what he wanted. Once that trash music started she was like damn he's selling out. Don't matter if she liked the music or not, it was about him. Thinking this is what she wanted was all the way off.

But I was expecting the typical conflict breakup argument a bit sooner and when it came late it shouldn't have been a surprise it was weak.

I just re-watched the argument and have to agree with Zik here.

Seb was trying to play the victim card, but to be fair to him, remember that he overheard Mia's convo with her family about his career. That is, they probably thought he was a directionless dude, which triggered his insecurities (as it would to anyone, honestly).

I think this is where he goofed up (trying to appease her/her family rather than himself), but it's a mistake that many people actually make (financial security / selling out >>> "lofty" dreams).

He knew it was his fault, but he tried to point the finger at her (a sign of weakness = blaming other people for your mistakes). He should've reflected on what he was saying before he said it and blew up the relationship. They never truly recovered from that, imo.

Still, I think the film did it well. Life never works out perfectly and it's clearly obvious that both Seb/Mia will always love each other, even if they're not together.

To all those saying Love > Career, I disagree.

IMO it's --> Our individual dreams and aspirations > Love.

At the end of the day, if you don't love yourself, you won't be in a position to be able to truly love somebody else.

Loving yourself is about dedicating yourself to your dreams and purpose. If you find love along the way, it should be in the capacity of the other person enhancing your life, not defining it.

In the case of Seb and Mia, they were on different paths and unfortunately they would have to sacrifice their individual dreams in order to stay together. So I thought the ending was closure for them to acknowledge that and be at peace with it, because in the end they both realized their dreams and that was way better than them sacrificing them for their love. It's bitter but it's real.

I watched it with my girl and we broke up 2 weeks later. Not exactly the same reason, but we weren't being true to ourselves in the relationship and we weren't willing to compromise. So we broke it off.

Furthermore, I think it's silly to sacrifice your personal dreams for love. Love is fleeting. We as individuals are constantly evolving, changing, beings. The person we are today will not be the same person we are 5 years from now. So why assume that love is eternal? Love can exist with many people, at many different times, in many different places. I believe we all can fall in love with several people at different times of our lives.

In the end, do you. If you find someone that can do them, while you do you, while you both enhance each others lives, then great. If not, stay true to yourself.

I don't see why it has to be a choice.

They helped each other with their dreams. If Seb was salty he could've never told her about the casting. Some of that argument with Mia also got Seb to get back to his dream.

Its more like they chose not to make it work and lost touch. Looking at the chosen careers there's no reason a long distance relationship couldn't work. Seb is in a LA. Movies are central to LA. She travels to film and promote that's it.

I just disagree with the writing choice of you're telling me those 2 loved each other.

Sorry to hear about that, bro. Were you guys together for a long time?

Powerful post.

Ideally you wouldn't have to choose.

I really need to see this movie for the second time.

I think a lot of you guys are in your early or mid 20s. Going after your goals and chasing your careers should definitely be important. But on the other side of the spectrum, I have friends who are very successful financially that are older (30s-40s). They worked harder than most in their early years to set their futures up. Most of them are single. I always ask them if they want to settle down, and the answer is typically "if I find the right person, but I'm not rushing it". The more successful you get, the more criteria you (may) have. They have nice materialistic things and travel a ton, but deep down...I do really wonder if they're happy because they have no one to share the success with.

If you hustled hard for a decade to be financially independent, do you fall for a worker at Starbucks? (An open end question, not trying to throw a stone at anyone).

Very true.

And when you're building your career and reach the top, you're usually surrounded by similarly like-minded, ambitious, and successful people.

So in a way, you seek a relationship with someone who's in your "class."

Agree with everything.

Funny my relationship ended 2 weeks after watching this too

Not buying the age excuse therefore you don't understand yet. It doesn't even apply to me.

I enjoyed the movie, but I thought the first two acts dragged and weren't that great.

That ending tho :x :smh: :frown:

This film was about 2 love stories.

The individuals loving the other person and the individuals loving their careers.

No one sacrificed their career for the other. So clearly they loved their careers more than the other person.

I saw the ending as a happy one. My wife thought it was tragic.

You cant have your cake and eat it too. Love is about sacrifice. We cant have it all in this life.

I saw it as bittersweet. They achieved their goals, but had to sacrifice a relationship to reach it.

I want to watch it again.

Emma's character makes me so mad.
She gave up on everything. Even her career. She got lucky that job fell in her lap and catered to her needs.

I really wish they would have written in a better character transformation from her, where the casting agents keep interrupting her auditions but she finds a way to beat them and stand out. I was waiting for that moment where she slaps the phone out of the casting agents hand or barges back in after getting denied but no.
