Nah. I was flourishing on emulators from age 11. Download emulator, download ROM, play game. Back then (GBA days) Visualboy Advance was the wave, but I still preferred playing officially released/purchased games because the point of the Game Boy is that it's portable and you play it anywhere, not sit at your computer and play.
My friend had what was called a "flash cart" though, which I guess was a blank GBA cartridge that he loaded hella ROMs onto from his PC, meaning he probably never ever paid or had someone buy him a GB game in his life
I remember playing an N64 emulator as well but N64 is trash on a PC keyboard.
