2017 Tax Season and Return Thread Vol. Tax Podcast Mixed In?

You'll most likely have to file a paper return. Were you trying to claim any dependents? I see a common problem being that people try to claim a dependent that somebody else has claimed all ready. Whoever files their return first will get it and then the other persons return will get rejected and then will have to file paper. Also, could be a name problem the Social Security Admin might have your name wrong. Other than that please post up the rejection code so we can assist you better.

Looking back at the rejection emails from last year I see 1040-8000-2 something about an issue with validating the signature

i got my 1095-a form, the monthly advanced credit was in the thousands. Does that mean I will owe a lot? Excuse my ignorance.

They tried to get me for $100 last year been done with em ever since. Once its not free I'm good on it, going to the next best free option.

They are charging for what still should be free over some itemized deductions. Makes no sense.

I filed my State and Federal for free the first week of the year for free w/ TurboTax. Winning!

Filed yesterday morning. State and Fed were "Accepted" within the hour.

Any chance I'll get hit with my direct deposit next week? :nerd:

I filed yesterday as well and basically had the same "Accepting" time as you. Vibes for those quick and easy direct deposits!!

I filed both federal and state for free on H&R Block but then again I just have basic W2's..

smh will do this next yr. turbo hit me for 104
Yeah man federal is free , state is $11 .
Freetaxusa still free if you have to file schedule D?
Should be , Itemized deductions are free, 1040's are free . Federal is free .

Guys it doesn't hurt nor take much time to "shop around" different companies tax return fees.

Try :

turbo tax

freetaxusa ( FREETAXUSA10 , 10% off code)

h&r block ( alot of people don't like them)

Your state may also have a Taxpayer Acess Point website, where you basically fill in a couple boxes and get your refund sent to your checking account. A LOT OF TIMES FOR FREE.

What you will need to know is your Adjusted Gross Income (which is available on the pdf/print out of your completed federal tax forms). So once you do your federal and file that, take the next (sometimes free) step and shop around, like the poster above is saying. For my state, its your AGI, W-2, and a couple of other boxes. No where near worth $36 for some computer to do it for you.

For example, if you go through the "free" turbo tax app, they try to make it ultra convenient by saying to file your state, it'll only cost $36.00.

I want to say its Turbo Tax deluxe that includes ONE state filing (for free). But nowhere do they make mention that many states have websites (like the freetaxusa interface) that are just as legit.

Good info Wally . Will see if md has free state filing next year.

Yea people really think too far into it. These tax software companies are literally just filing out a pdf for you and submitting it to the IRS and your states tax department. That's it, it's not worth paying over $20 total for IMO . I am trying to get it to as close as free for state and fed as possible.

People in general tend to freak out when they see popups on Turbo Tax when you complete your Federal. They assume the state has to be done right away at that very moment.

For MD:

It mentions using iFile for free

Since the return was rejected last year you have to file paper to get that return into the state taxing authority. Are you in IL and did you try to file with Turbo Tax Last year? If so this quick google search came up with your problem:

Hopefully this can help you e-file this year

Are there any tax credit for your first home?

Granted I've only made 4 payments on the mortgage, I was suprised my return barely changed. I entered all the tax info from my mortgage company and bank.

Only credit is if you purchased through a program I believe, or if you have any energy credits like for solar panels, energy efficient upgrade etc.

You get to deduct the interest payment and real estate taxes for your home, so if you only had 4 payments you received 4 months of interest payment deductions.

You will see a bigger difference next year depending on how much interest you are paying per month.

I had a similar situation last year purchased my home in September.

You also have to remember that if your itemized deduction aren't higher than the standard deduction you won't see much of a difference.

Used to use TurboTax but they charge for state filing so I started using HR Block since Federal and State is free. It was a pain in the beginning but easier if you don't change jobs since the info is stored from last year. I did a couple of side jobs so it's gon be a pain filing this year :smh:

For those with lots of investments do you wait to file closer to March/April?
From what i've seen 1099-B's don't get mailed until late Feb so they get to people late Feb/March then people's accountants are super busy so they get pushed to the back of the line which causes delays in filing.
