2017 Tax Season and Return Thread Vol. Tax Podcast Mixed In?

Is there a way to (for next year) gets deduction for traveling 40 minutes to an internship for school? It's a graduation requirement :nerd:

No because it's a job and traveling to and from a primary job is nondeductible. It's why there is a federal program where you employer can allow you to deduct money for parking and train/bus travel from your paycheck pre-taxes. Yes it sucks but it's quite logical why that's the case.

It's not a primary job. I have a full time job.

Only way it would be deductible is if you were to say drive to job 1 then to internship then back home in one day. The distance from job 1 to internship the miles are deductible. And if the distance from the internship back him is more than job 1 to home then that difference is deductible.

If you are going to job 1 say mon-wed. And then internship Thur-sat then you can't do anything because on each day that is your particular job.

Jus filed. Owe a ton of money. Delaying paying till April. Any hardships i can apply for? I mean I claimed 4 all year knowing I was gonna end up paying but i didn't know my job was gonna cut out 30 hrs a paycheck for the last few months. smh

Normally go through my mom's guy who does our taxes, but I'm thinking of doing it myself this year.

I see the freetaxusa is getting good reviews on here.

Is it hard to do? Or am I better off having someone do it for me? I live in FL btw

I was working half the year under a temp agency, then got hired on fulltime by my job in August, and then my health insurance didn't kick in until November. So I was without insurance all year until November.

You should do it on your own, its super easy and saves you from paying someone. TurboTax is still more user friendly I would use that if you only have W2s to file, Freetaxusa is only good because TT stops you and makes you pay for an upgrade package if you have a 1099 form to file, freetaxusa lets you do this for free (all you do is pay the 12.99 for state, theres a 10 pct discount somewhere here). For the health insurance, I realized that you either have to go through healthcare.gov and file an exemption and get some kind of code, or you can do it directly with the Tax return program while filing you can just click the months you were covered and the rest you can click on some stuff to see if you can be exempt through hardship etc. Mainly a lot of people here were able to do so by just clicking it was unaffordable during that time and got exempt.  Hope this helps man.

Does anyone get there gas receipts itemized? Was curious how much more you can get from doing this? A friend mentioned it the other day.

How much does turbo tax charge for state filling? I don't remember from last year.

I don't understand why you have to pay taxes on unemployment. This is your money that you put into the system and when you need it, get a stipend. You get a fraction of what you made previously and they still want to tax it. Lost over $1,000 on my return because I had to pay the state back for what was rightfully mine. Unreal.

Because it's compensation, and considered taxable income for Federal purposes. What unemployment tax are you paying though?

Employers are the ones paying for unemployment insurance to both the Feds (FUTA Form 940) and State. For CA it's an SUI tax that employers pay not the employees.

Just got my w2. But im about to get married before i have time to file, what changes when i file now that i will be married?

It's tax year to tax year, so dont worry about it now. You file for the year prior. Next years return will be different.

@carbon16, I want to say anywhere from $11 to $20 for state alone. Like I mentioned a page back or so, look into seeing if you can file for free on your states tax website. You'll need to put in a solid 20-60 minutes of time, but if you are browsing the internet doing nothing, why not essentially pay yourself to do it

carbon16, Just some corrections.

TT is tricky, as there are different editions, and some include 1 "free state e-file". It can be anywhere from free to $34 from what my immediate recollection.

I think freetaxusa, as mentioned before is something like a flat $11 for state. So pick your poison

Got my federal refund this morning direct deposit. State refund came yesterday. Big up turbotax :pimp:

State and federal were accepted on the 26th, but no update on where's my refund yet. Still says return received.
