from CNN: The gunman had a gun checked in his baggage and had declared the firearm, law enforcement sources told CNN.

i always thought you could check in a gun, but couldnt have the ammo for it.

Baggage claim area isn't secured, so really someone could have walked in off the street and done the same thing. Travelling with the gun doesn't really make much of a difference in a situation like this IMO.

You can check a gun and pretty much unlimited ammo. I always bring my carry pistol and 2 clips when I travel. Most states accept my CCW, and honestly if they don't I will not go there unless my job requires it. I would guess that there is a firearm checked on at least 30% of the flights each day. On average I fly 10k miles a month so plenty of talking on the plane with the other frequent flyers.

It's crazy because airports are an easy target for someone looking to harm a lot of people. Anyone can pretty much walk into an airport without being searched. It isn't until you go through TSA where you're checked for weapons.

i think airport protocol will be changed.
when i went to the Philippines you had to go through metal detectors just to get inside the airport.
