ok so I've wanted to make this thread for a min ...i wanna ask what happened to archetypes of people or styles that came and went that aren't at da level of "heat", its more like tone, influences, inspiration, and regional flava conversations that have been lost in da sands of time and internet style homogenization..

please post examples of what you're referencing when u ask a question or comment.

trivial regional minutia, ancillary accoutrements, esoteric fodder is welcome.

ill start with a relatively easy question..

ite so Atlanta natives... I randomly was watching

what exactly happened to this archetype of Southern folks?...they dress more akin to Northern folk, and yet they're in Atlanta.

when did this archetype of people/style give way to da more contemporary Atlanta we know now? or even when did it give away to say how Lil John motiff came to prominence?

i chalk it up to social media. back in the day you had to be around and in the mix to be hip to fashions, slang, etc. now you just log on IG or whatever and its all at your fingertips. this means not only is everybody hip, but they're all hip to the same things. back in the day unless you got around like that you were really only hip to your own area so that was how you dressed, talked, etc. regional identity is fading away.

After re-reading this post I still can't call it. You wylin

lol...think a esoteric, nuanced, regional, period piece specific version of da celebs wearing heat thread...broadened to discuss da general population of styles that are gone, but don't have a big enough impact to anchor a era on its own I.E. "jersey era" "baggy era" etc.

while this is true, it still leaves me wondering why those Atlanta folks in that old soso def video dressed da way they did....and I ain't see one dread head either... seeing as how this predates social media it got me wondering how did da shift took place down there.

see in NYC i can string together when things changed thru da years predating social media in terms of archetypes, its... HIGHLY NYC regional specific, but its somewhat accurate.

I wonder what happened to the tall tee and baggy pants trend. Like, how/when did it end and transition into the fitted clothes?

the worldwide connectivity and the fast fashion monster has homogenized regional uniqueness,

I just ordered this fashion history book before I came in and saw this thread

I'm 24 now. Out here in Cali, probably specifically where I was at, I live in Inglewood, and drifted around Bellflower, Long Beach area,  fitted(skinny) clothing started rising with the whole Jerkin movement in HS. Before, dudes were all over LRG's, True Religion, Red Monkey's, and all that ****. All baggy like usual. Next thing you know, this jerkin **** comes out and everybody rocking all sorts of non name brand, rainbow colored skinnies, and Nike Blazers that made it look like they had big *** clown feet. And it just spread from there. Not to say that's how it re-originated solely, but out here, from what I saw for the kids my age, that's how this fitted clothing thing started.

Kanye getting more shine on MTV a few months before J dropped 'Change Clothes" started all this. After Kanye blew up and Jay's Change Clothes did what it did all these brands; Hollister, A&F, RL Polo, Lacoste, Sperry boat shoes, high end denim just completely took over on the West Coast.

I'm so glad I missed the skinny jean/jerkin era in High school. It wasbad enough in college but I can only imagine what it was like in high school.

Every party turned into a bunch of yellow skinny jean wearing dudes jerking. :smh:

Pause.

what happened to the square toe prowess of the 1990s and 2000s? now everyone wants those rounded lasts...

when you saw someone rocking those you knew they were about business, because they cut no corners...

Jay z bodied that when he switched to button downs

dudes was still wearing a 4x button down with baggy jeans and a fitted
I feel like Kanye then Jimmy started the more true to size stuff

accurate.

Jay-Z bodied da OG jersey era...not da baggy era, which ruined asethetics of rap videos for 2 years and created a subculture of 40 yr old poorly dressed OG's who wear powder blue Yankee fitteds w/ matching oversized buttonups :x

really it was Jim Jones and Juelz followed suit..

da drastic change was from da "oh yes" video to da "clockwork" video.

cam'ron was da last to slim up...

that transitional period of going from baggy to slim was probably da most interesting time in fashion ive ever witnessed.

you would have pictures of random people in da same photo all evolving at different speeds.

like in 2006 at a party you would da buttonup crowd, a vestige of da jersey era, and then outta no where, jim jones esque rock star slim rockin tru religion jeans people, then emerging street wear.

If i remember correctly my senior year in HS (06) was when i copped my First Trues, after that the jeans started getting progressively skinnier. It still took awhile for the entire hood to make that switch tho.
