Golf Discussion - The Open Championship at Royal Liverpool Golf Club

Storming out in the Bay Area recently but might be able to get out this weekend if it's dry.

I think a lesson would do me well but I'm just stubborn.
 
Played 9 yesterday, was in a hurry. Changed my swing up and it's way more affective. I'm hitting 140/150 yards with my wedge. All my distances are longer and higher... problem is I'm hitting a bunch of stuff over the green.

Dialing in within the next month.
 
One of the hardest things for me is getting a gauge on my irons. At this point, I'm better playing only with a driver, pitching wege and putter, no matter how long it takes me to get up and down the fairway. Once I pull out any of my irons, I'm either way short are too long.

Tinkered around and changed to the Vardon grip last round. Hit less arrant shots so we'll see if it sustains. Felt weird af at first. Something as simple as grip goes a long way

Fully agreed, that's how I've been able to get my score down to this point.

My routine:

30 minutes of putting.
30 minutes of chipping from the rough, from bunkers, and green.

The biggest thing I'm working on now if my damn driver swing. Just can't find it yet.

I'm pretty good at two putting from 20 feet and beyond. Pretty good with my wedges. Just can't get my driver/off the tee down.

Next on my to do list is lessons, those are expensive though... be some time until I pull that trigger.

So many good videos on YT that it can be fixed.

I'd start with finding out if you are on an in-out swing path.
 
Get a range finder then practice hitting irons on the range or a par 3 course. It will help you dial in distances.
 
I just started hitting some balls, bought a set of used irons, hand me down driver, putter etc, and ranging it for about 1 month now. I'm hooked so I range it almost daily.

My group of experienced friends convinced me learning on the course is the way to go and we've gone twice, two different courses, Los Coyotes and Los Serrano (for those in OC/LA area, both are pretty nice, about $60-$70 so not bad price wise?). 

They felt "throw you to the sharks" approach would be best to learn. Despite the multitude of lost balls, triple bogeys, overall noobness and exhaustion, it was awesome. I admit the drinking/smoking/relaxing aspect of it helped.

Does anyone have suggestions for a good SW considering price/skill level/quality?
 
Used Nike or Cleveland will do you right. EBay or your local second hand shop.




Played yesterday and today. Shot a 97 yesterday and 106 today. Yesterday was a really nice day but I was awful off the tee.

Today the conditions were bad, lots of wind and it was really wet/damp.

Monarch Bay is so unforgiving.

Thanks for the suggestion. It looks like I can't go wrong with Cleveland wedges. I'm in pretty close proximity to several retailers that always have used clubs on hand, so probably will look to find something there.

At this point I basically can't tee off with a driver, so am really working on my irons.

Even at this stage I can see that good approaches, chipping, and eliminating 3 putts >>> crushing it off the tee.

It's one of the most frustrating, counterintuitive learning curves I've had, but also surprisingly I don't feel overly self conscious about sucking.  I'm also being careful not to get ahead of myself and feel like "I got this" after a few good hits at the range.
 
I can't tee off with a driver either... can hit 220 with my 3 Hybrid though.

Still putting in work with my driving swing.
 
ESPN has pretty good coverage of golf...I've been watching the featured groups on ESPN + and other than the lady commentator stepping on Rory's ball, it's been good. :lol:

Tiger missed a few chances here early. :smh:
 
I was reading an article about Jordan Spieth learning from Tiger that when he plays with him, he notices Tiger never gets negative about his shots...he will get frustrated, but never would call himself out and how Jordan needed to incorporate that...

Well, Tiger just went wide right on a drivable par 4 and just called himself a ****ing dickhead. :lol:

:lol: we’ve all been there/had those rounds where, for whatever reason(playing like **** most likely), go against what works for us

We need a Bryson/Koepka pairing tomorrow :lol:
