A couple requests

2. Ability to see who up votes who.
This is happening on day 1.

Why would mods reveal who reports people it defeats the whole purpose of why they made it anonymous
 idk because I feel like if you do report someone you should also own up to it. If someone says something that bad or bothersome there is a block option isn't there or am I tripping?

I feel like from the way people are already "talking" about negs, seeing who reps, seeing who reports etc., that it's a recipe for disaster.

I like the rep system as is. It's a simple acknowledgment. I don't care to see who "reps" me.

Sometimes less is more.

this.

i personally like the anonymity of the rep system here. When you don't know who appreciates something you post, its kind of like a feeling of "it could be anyone" so its like the community appreciates it rather than "this person"

i feel like it it could created cliques somehow. like if two people where in an argument for whatever reason and someone repped one sides reply.
or say there was an argument about religion or politics, and someone who hardly posts reps one side of an argument..they will be known for that.

i do understand the reasoning behind it for weeding out trolls tho. like if someone reps an ignorant or racist statement. ...but if I'm correct, the mods can see who reps who so they could just put them on blast.

either way though I'm all for the new direction and whatever changes may be.

To clarify:  we are not considering the use of negative reputation scores / down votes on the new platform.

Valuable content should be promoted and users should feel appreciated for making positive contributions.  Awarding positive reputation points serves that purpose.  The possibility existed to add a second type of feedback, like a "thanks" button, but that, to me, makes little sense.  Positive content is positive content.  If you post something helpful, great.  If you make people smile, great.  You're doing something to improve the experience and a "thumbs up" button is an easy way to give and receive positive feedback for that.

If there's garbage in the street, you don't need to give everyone the ability to place traffic cones around it to draw even more attention to the garbage.  What you need is a recycle bin on every corner so that responsible citizens can take part in caring for their community.

That, to the mature user, is the purpose of the report button.  All the grade school "snitching" connotations to the report feature are childish and counterproductive.

Garbage should be removed, not emphasized.

Sweet. Hopefully my SN doesn't lost in this transition this time.
It won't.  This time, we'll actually have access to the complete user database.  If you have a working account on NikeTalk today, it will be transferred to the new site.

Will the banned accounts be revived?

Absolutely not.
As long as this dude stays buried and dead...

You have my sword.
There used to be a picture of the Yuku magician with a knife in his back, which would've been particularly appropriate here.  I think that one might be lost to the ages, though, much like the value of platform itself.

Thankfully, Yuku's up-time (or lack thereof) is one problem we'll never have to worry about again.

When I say full mobile support, does this mean an app will be coming soon?

Wifey said to me the other day that she's surprised there hasn't been an app developed yet and I was just like *kanye shrug*

All of this. I definitely feel reps should remain anonymous.

Another platform change :wow:

Hopefully everything does go smoothly this time around [emoji]128591[/emoji][emoji]127995[/emoji]

Hey Meth, will the website format change or will it look similar to what he have now with new additions?

The mention notifications sounds great. I don't have email notifications set up so I find it hard to see where im mentioned

But seeing who gets up voted is a game changer

Good stuff meth

I don't really think an app is necessary, as long as they mobile version is as good as this platforms.  I prefer to do everything in my browser and use multiple windows regularly, and not use apps.

I would like a better way to keep track of the threads I post in. It would be nice to have the ability to delete the threads you no longer post in under your profile to keep track of the threads you regularly post in. The unsubscribe option doesn't do much for me.

interesting [emoji]129300[/emoji]

i'm sure it'll go smooth. excited for the new mobile especially

Full mobile support can mean different things to different people.

Our current website offers incomplete mobile support by pretty much every definition, but, most critically, not all pages and content types are mobile-optimized.  You can't create a classified listing in mobile view.  Even for pages that are mobile optimized, sometimes information is stripped out that users could find helpful - like reputation scores.

The new site will be more unified.  As it stands, there's no separate "mobile mode."  Aspects of the layout can be configured to change depending on display orientation/size, etc. so you get a version of the site that is display appropriate for all pages.

App support is quite costly and complicated.  Often, the issue is less with just getting something working, but in keeping it working across all different mobile device/OS variations.  Thank, if you ask almost anyone who's ever done mobile development, is a waking nightmare.

The good news is that I don't think we really need something that uses all the bells and whistles associated with custom mobile apps.  Really, do we NEED geolocation services, for example?  Do we need fancy transition animations?  The top request for a mobile app, by far, is push notifications.  If an alert you care about occurs (say, a new PM or a new reply is added to a thread you've started), you may want your phone to notify you of that immediately, whether you're on the site or not.

We can do that using a very basic type of app that leans on the website itself, rather than a bunch of native code, to generate the content and interface.

To be honest, I don't use email notifications, either.  I can't, to be honest, because of the way the system was designed.  As someone with site owner/admin access, my inbox would be flooded with notifications for user reports, etc. if I enabled email subscriptions.

As a result, I have no idea when people are trying to use the @ mention function to bring my attention to a given post or thread.  Email notification was not, to my knowledge, intended to be the "be all, end all" delivery system for site notifications.  The problem is that feature development, with precious few exceptions, effectively ended quite awhile ago on this platform.

Really, the biggest improvement for the new platform is that it will give us a comparable experience today, but it remains in a state of active development, which will allow us to continue to deliver improvements to the site's security and core functionality over time.  What's more, because the platform allows for external development and customization, we have access to a much broader array of add ons - and even the option to commission the development of new features just for NikeTalk, if we can afford it.

We know all too well what can happen when you linger on a stagnant platform.  Moving will allow us to avoid that issue in the future.  We always want our community to be part of a living, growing software ecosystem.  How we use the web today is quite different from how we used it 10 years ago or even, in many cases, five years ago.

For all the nostalgia many of our oldest members harbor for ezboard, I don't think any of us could tolerate it today.  We take a lot of things for granted as "standard" now that did not exist on NikeTalk's forum platform in 1999.  A "timeless" movie wouldn't feel quite so timeless if you needed an ancient film projector to watch it.

Today, we want NikeTalk to go where we go.  A mobile site isn't a "sidekick" or "companion" to the desktop site, that can get away with being stripped down or limited to only those core functions you might need "on the go."  The majority of our visits now come from mobile devices.  That experience can't be "NikeTalk, Jr."  We need a platform that can keep up with the changing needs of our community members, whether they're joining us from a  smartphone with a 5" touchscreen or a high-powered desktop computer connected to a sprawling 6k monitor.

Hey Meth, will the website format change or will it look similar to what he have now with new additions?
It won't be identical, but it will be familiar.  There will be some changes to the layout, but it shouldn't be anything terribly dramatic.  The classic forum display should remain very much intact and true to what we've always had.

The flat design trend today is actually very similar to the design style we've implemented on NT for many, many years.  We want to maintain a clean, streamlined look.

As I've put it before, NikeTalk, as a platform, is essentially the black night sky against which our fellow members shine.  The people and the content are the stars.  The look and layout must reflect that.

I don't really think an app is necessary, as long as they mobile version is as good as this platforms.  I prefer to do everything in my browser and use multiple windows regularly, and not use apps.
Statistically, the vast majority of apps are never used more than once or twice. (If they're downloaded at all.)  We would never prioritize an app ahead of the primary site itself.  Making sure that experience is the best it can be for all users across all devices is a top priority.

Our current plan is to try and create the best site we can for mobile and desktop users, and then find a way to bring in push notifications for those who want them.

There actually is a way to do that now - but only for desktop users.  (This is a recurring theme.)

You can configure the front page of the desktop to only show you threads you've posted in.  To do it, though, you have to click the "subscriptions only" button - which just changes color from grey to BLUE, which is hardly a natural indicator for "on" or "off."  (Perhaps it's meant to approximate an illuminated light, but this is a website, not a clock radio from the 1970s.)

You then have to "uncheck" all categories other than "Forums."

Thankfully, these changes then save.  So, from that point forward, when you browse on desktop you can monitor your subscriptions right on the front page - and it'll show you when and how many new replies have been added in real time.  If you don't want to follow a thread anymore, mouse over it and click the red X that appears.

Properly configured, it's a great feature and one I'd love to extend to the new platform if possible.  Problem is: it only ever worked on desktop and, even then, the implementation was pretty unintuitive, to put it mildly.

Definitely +1 for reps remaining anonymous.
Since more than a few people seem to feel like this, perhaps we should vote on it as a community?
If we're to grow and improve, we need to ability to try new things.  With changes of this nature, there's often a status quo bias.

The goal of the reputation system is to reward good content.  It should not be used as an anonymous "agree" button, to reward those who say rude or offensive things that a user agrees with, but would never verbalize themselves.

It also makes it easier to identify abuses of the system, because it's apparent to anyone - not just a staff member who's gone to a separate page specifically to audit the user's reputation score.

We'll give the new system a try and evaluate it from there.

if you use the my subscriptions function and unsubscribe the threads shouldnt show anymore.

I'm just glad it's not going away

So many of my forums have died because of FB

#NTforever even if I'm still kinda a noob

One of my biggest complaints about this version of NT rather than the Yuku/EZ versions is that the first couple of posts are scrunched and do not stretch across the page like the posts after the first few.  When anyone posts a youtube video and it happens to be one of the first three posts of a page, a good portion of the youtube screen is chopped off.  I hate that it doesnt resize to fit inside the smaller message box.

The new site needs to do away with the shrunken first 3 posts per page IMO.
