I really don't see why we need the change for all the added bells and whistles

This is a really good platform it's never down on major releases and there is little to no maintenance on the site

This might be a silly question but is the new website PC friendly that's where I spend most of my time when on NT even though I'm typing this message on a phone and I have no problem with it and niketalks current mobile platform

This current site is 100 times better then the NT OG site

Sounds like this is going to be an easier transition than in 2012. Can't believe it's been 5 years since we moved to this platform..

I use both mobile and computer to access NT..mobile is cool but I just look at the threads i'm subscribed to because it's easier than looking at the entire "Nike" forum on a mobile device like an iPhone..that's just my opinion tho.

Definitely wondering if there's an option to change your screen name. In 2003, the 13 year old me somehow figured this was IT.

One of my biggest complaints about this version of NT rather than the Yuku/EZ versions is that the first couple of posts are scrunched and do not stretch across the page like the posts after the first few.  When anyone posts a youtube video and it happens to be one of the first three posts of a page, a good portion of the youtube screen is chopped off.  I hate that it doesnt resize to fit inside the smaller message box.

The new site needs to do away with the shrunken first 3 posts per page IMO.

@Methodical Management
he just said that he doesn't see those @ ?

Now that repping won't be anonymous, street cats won't rep another man...in front of their sons?
Might as well call anyone you publicly rep your daddy.
This wouldn't go down in Harlem.

This..I've wanted to change my screen name to something simpler since I rarely buy shoes anymore..Having an outdated screen name sucks..

As a result, I have no idea when people are trying to use the @ mention function to bring my attention to a given post or thread.

Never thought about the screen name change but if we can cool, if not, whatever. 2006 me will live on

I'm sure you have enough testers, but if not please sign me up.

:nthat:

On to another chapter in the NT legacy.

Any plans to continue on with the NT donation badging? Did you find it helped push the donations?

Obviously we should be giving selflessly, but it is a cool thing to remember your small contribution to the large work NT does.

Also increase in rep giving? I mean if we have it why not use it as much as we can

There's no question that the badges were effective.  When we introduced a three tiered badge system, with the middle tier priced at $25, the average contribution jumped up to $25.  It was much lower when the only badge available was for all contributions above $10.  Clearly, the badges were an incentive.

I know that the new platform does have a badge system, but I'm not sure it can be set to accept our existing badges or display them in the exact same way.  It's of course our goal to transfer the badges over as best we can.  When we moved to Huddler, that involved manually reassigning almost all of them one at a time.

On to another chapter in the NT legacy.
Early testing may be limited but, as we get close to relaunch, we'll also probably need to do a little stress testing for the new server.  At that point we'd benefit from a broader testing base.

Anyone interested should still post to request beta access.  We haven't yet reached the point where we're likely to turn people down.

I imagine it's possible on the back end, at least on the database side, but there probably isn't a way for users to easily change their own names due to the confusion it could create.  It also creates some added risk for sites with classified sections, since buyers or sellers could quickly change their identities.  Constant name changes could be pretty jarring to the community, if nothing else.

A more likely solution would be that we'd consider a name change request one time per account, as it's unlikely the system would have a feature that would permit user-initiated name changes - but only once every 2 years.

The change isn't being made purely for "added bells and whistles."  It's being made so that we have a platform beyond June, and a platform that is still in active development.

To your second question, the new website will absolutely be PC friendly.  Mobile use has eclipsed desktop use overall, but desktop is often the preferred platform for content creation.  We want to facilitate both quick comments and really substantive posts, too, and make sure everyone has the tools they need to contribute and enjoy the community, whatever your preferred platform.

As others have mentioned, that's caused by the sidebar units, which includes modules for recent images, tags (which we don't really use, but, because all Huddler sites have the same basic layout, can't remove), and, yes, an ad unit.  It's easy to say "get rid of the ads, they get in the way," but that's how we pay the bills.

The good news moving forward is twofold:

First, we'll have more control over the layout and, as part of the testing process, we'll likely try out a variety of different potential ad placements.  A square ad unit in the right frame is less obtrusive than a square ad unit served between posts (common on other forum sites), and a horizontal ad unit served between posts would yield less, so we'd have to run more of them to generate the same amount.  It may be that we still need to run a sidebar on the new site - but that doesn't necessarily mean it will compress or obstruct content in the way that Huddler does.

That leads me to the second benefit: it is possible, with the right theme, for module placement to shift according to the dimensions of the user's display.  So if, for example, you're browsing on a phone or you shift the orientation of your tablet to portrait, modules that were tied to the right side of the screen move to the bottom of the screen.

I haven't tested this yet, and the theme for our site hasn't even really begun work yet, so I can't promise anything, but my hope is that this would work even on a widescreen desktop that lacks the resolution required to display, say, a youtube video completely within the allotted space when the sidebar module is present.

If nothing else, we're hoping to deliver some improvement in this area.  We may still have a sidebar, for example, but we'll do our best to make sure it never cuts off any content as it can here.

Yea, a mentions notification on the website would be great instead of having to check your email for them, which are sporadic.
