NikeTalk will be moving from July 13th-14th.

I believe that puts us up to 40 beta requests.  Beyond 50, I can't guarantee access and we'll have to figure out a fair way to select the test group.

Most of the work is still going on behind the scenes, making sure everything transfers as cleanly and accurately as possible, but we'll be sure to share more as we get closer to launch.

We were forced into making a change, but we'll do our best to deliver as much of an upgrade as possible.

If you're anything like me, for example, you'll get a lot of mileage out of this:  on the new site, you can quote portions of a post by using the highlight feature.

Quoting using this method retains the author information and is compatible with quote notifications, too.

I'd say the test period is roughly two weeks away.

Barring glitches, of course.

Is it possible that treads from the older version like this one will be fixed? I really hope so...

And the double posting removed wouldn't hurt.

It would be extremely difficult, because that would basically require us to perform two migrations.

Our priority is to save the site by converting our existing data to the new format as accurately as possible before the hard deadline of June 30th.

Most likely, then, what's going to happen is that posts from prior to 2012 will be no more or less accurate than they are today.  It will be a perfect copy of the imperfect copy of that data Huddler created in 2012 with our migration to the platform.  Correcting it would require us to essentially go back an redo the original migration all over again.

Even if we did so, not all of the errors would be corrected.  Many of the blank posts likely contain images that no longer exist on their original hosts.  Images in the old days were typically hotlinked from external sources whose reliability and availability we cannot control.

Double posts were not an error in the migration process, but an error in the old, horrible platform we moved here from.  Double posting and server lag were the bane of our existence there for far too long.

Now, it may be theoretically possible to write some sort of script to examine every single post and check to see if the subsequent post is a duplicate - but when you consider how many posts we have, how tight our migration schedule is, and the density of tasks that must already be performed to convert and optimize each post for the new site, it's just not feasible to run something like that to clean up the redundancies found in data from 5+ years ago.

If we were to attempt such a process after our new site launches, it would be costly, with no real return on investment, which would leave less for the type of custom development projects I imagine most members would want to see for the future, and it could also result in significant downtime.

We're doing our best to keep the downtime to a minimum for the migration - but we're able to do so, in part, because we're able to work on the new site while the current one is still in operation.  After we launch, we lose that capability.

In terms of restoring old posts, it would be simpler if we find those threads people care most about and a group of members worked with our staff to flag duplicate posts for deletion.  That way, we could knock out the double posts in selected threads with no downtime and no adverse impact on the development budget moving forward.

I usually just browse thru my subscriptions so I just came across this thread. Looking forward to the move and also that one-time username change :pimp:.

Excited for the new site. Gonna miss this version though. It's the only NT I know and I've grown fond of it.

The quote notification feature and new quote capabilities look dope.

Kinda interested in changing my name, but people know me as this so I might as well keep it.

Damn this is dope. Forum changes usually ruin sites, like Hypebeast... nobody on the forums anymore.

I however, believe that this change for NT will make it even better.

I still remember going on Nikepark with my Dial up modem using the free trial AOL cds. What a time to be alive.

Was the name change confirmed?

It's planned.

Again, one issue with the conversion is that formatting within user names won't carry over.  (Capitalization, spacing, etc.)  The idea was to give everyone the ability to easily correct that.

In the process, however, it also gives us the opportunity to provide all existing members with the chance to perform a one time username change even beyond formatting corrections.

We're working with the same team that recently converted The Cat Site from Huddler to the new platform.  Here's how they addressed it:

We're looking to do the same basic thing for NikeTalk.  At any point after launch, you can perform your ONE TIME name change.  After you change your name, the option disappears.

If you changed to nickmaz2017, someone else won't be able to come along and take nickmaz96 for themselves.  Banned names can't be claimed, either.  We'll have a clear record of who's changing their names to what and we'll create custom user titles so it's clear that User X was "formerly known as User Y," for example.

NikeTalk will turn 18 in December.  This won't be the first forum platform we've outlived.  I think what we've proven - particularly with this last move - is that it's the people who make the community, not the platform.

While many of us have nostalgic memories of the old platform(s), it's essential that we continue to move the technology forward.  Adopting something like site-wide SSL, for example, isn't something that we could responsibly ignore - and there are lots of other little conveniences and optimizations that most people grow accustomed to on other sites and online services they use that they'd be disappointed to find missing on NikeTalk.

When we moved to this platform five years ago, some people said they really missed our original platform - which had no image hosting, stored only 20 pages of topics per form, had no backups, had no @ mentions, new post notification, or on site subscriptions, so you could easily track threads you're interested in or actively participate in.

Our goal is to try and make the new site still feel like home while, at the same time, using the new platform and its continued growth to extend new features to try and make the experience even better.

As I've mentioned, the new site does offer support for multiple themes - so perhaps it would be possible, at some point, to offer a "classic" theme that replicates some familiar design elements from our old Huddler site.

This is a change that was essentially forced on us, and others who used the Huddler platform.  Saving our community is, of course, the first priority - but I hope everyone knows that we're working our hardest to make the new site the best it can be, and we're sparing no expense to do so.

We're pushing hard to ensure that the site you experience at relaunch isn't a life raft or a refugee camp, but a new home you can feel comfortable in right away.

From the example sites posted the new forum looking very yuku like. I personally will miss huddler, literally took us from da 'jects to e-suburbia
