Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

If that's how you view it, that's fine. I'm not sure where you're trying to go but it doesn't matter to me. We don't separate artist and the music, I try to but I can't do it with everyone. I listen to Busta and MJ off that list, MJ was weird as hell but he's been called the GOAT entertainer of all time. If it came out LeBron liked to wear dresses and heels, he's still gonna be top 5 of all time. Busta was never that weird to me, just animated. You gonna tell me Uzi has the talent that MJ, Prince or 3K? No. I also don't like his music. If he wore Fubu, Timbs and a Durag, I still wouldn't listen. That music ain't for me.

When did music and lifestyle become mixed?

Ross a cop and has made some of the biggest kingpin anthems

Sometimes we indulge too much in ****** personal lives

Uhh...since forever?

Music is lifestyle/culture and that's what some of you ****** don't get. This isn't some new phenomenon either. You can trace this back to Ancient Egypt, Rome, etc. You can identify this in other genres of music.

Adele is a worldwide phenomenon not just because she can sing well. She's an iconic figure to women who struggle with issues of body image and depression.
The Beatles aren't revered just because they were great musicians. They had a massive cultural impact on the entire world.

You live in the Drake thread. Are you ****** only discussing music in there? You ****** aren't e-slapping high fives with each other and leaving :pimp: 's when Drake is photographed with a porn star or some other hollywood chick?

The image of musicians has ALWAYS been important. Especially now. If it wasn't....why would they even bother with social media? Why would brands and companies flock to them?

This is a GREAT point. I don't listen to Adele or Sam Smith because there's MAD black singers that make similar music that aren't getting any love at all. They're selling and streaming 20K total but these white artists are so soulful and going 7x platinum and diamond. Image will always affect your opinion on an artist.

If you not feeling their music, it's fine. But that's weak reasoning imo. So hypothetically speaking if we were to get an extraordinary talent like the names you mention, you'd dismiss all the weirdness and focus on the music, which is all that should matter in the first place.

I'm saying...you got people that write an artist off just because of their lifestyle outside of music.
And you got people that listen to artists because of their lifestyle outside of music.

It's not a rule...but it is reality. You listen to Drake...I listen to Drake sometimes. I happen to think he's a major ******* dweeb...but i enjoy his earlier work and can't deny good music. From what I've gathered...I'm pretty sure you happen to think he's a cool guy and that does indeed factor into your overall view of him. It may not be the sole reason why you like Drake...but buying into the personality does play a factor.

I happen to think these Uzi/Thug dudes are *** overall....but how they dress isn't why I think their music is bad.

At the end of the day...to consider yourself a fan of a musician...you are indeed buying into their persona as well. I've said this before...but if Childish Gambino made the same music as 21 Savage...the listener would instantly notice the disconnect between the music and the image. I don't even know how this is debatable. I KNOW you know an artists' image matters. One isn't in front of the other...they work simultaneously side by side.

I wonder how Hahahaha Hahahaha feels about O'Dell Beckham, Russell Westbrook and D Wade.

Especially Odell

He hate them too. I keep tryna tell ya'll Baller hates any and everything.

FOH, I love ODB and Russell.

It kills me the **** that they do. The clothes they wear but that's the new look especially if you got money. I'm a Giants fan so I'm a huge ODB fan. Russell is a top 5 player so it is what it is but I just SMH when i see the **** he wears. Try to forget and just watch him on the court. Wade too old to be crossdressing.

Of course the image matters, Ross is an anomaly, he kept hitting us with great music after all those allegations came out and people was looking at him funny but ultimatley got over it (for the most part)

I feel like a lot of times their image ultimately boxes them in to making a certain range of music, as your example with Gambino/21...we only accept certain music from artists, that fit into their "bubble" of lifestyle.

So has the kdot being the number one in the rap game been laid to rest. It felt forced by both of them when they said it but continue to bring up drake every episode.

Thank you for stating the obvious. It doesn't make your question any less absurd.

You're more than welcome to think your mans is number one if it makes you feel better though.

He just outsold him.
Yes but Drake dropped his album on a saturday afternoon with no promo and his first week wasn't even a full first week lol but I know, "Drake stans be like" blah  blah blah lol
