Rap About Nothing: Hip Hop Chat Thread

A mega star to me is

Jay, Puff and Kanye. They're much bigger than music and are a part of pop culture. It doesn't matter if they do music or not.

Drake, Kendrick and Cole aren't on that level. They're totally dependent on music.
I can agree with this. Puff didn't cross my mind.

I'm amazed and not amazed that Snoop is still around. He has released nothing but trash for damn near a decade now.

there aren't many mega stars

kevin hart and the rock type stuff

really when I think of a mega star I'm thinking michael jackson level

everybody passing out when they see you situations

there's nobody out right now that gives off that type of energy that I can think of

Beyonce sure is close if we're talking mega stars outside of the hip hop climate

Didn't watch the episode so someone clarify, is the whole megastar / superstar thing based on only hip-hop or mainstream music as a whole?

I think it's based on hip-hop acts who are mainstream. Although Ak tried to say The Weeknd is a megastar and he's not exactly hip-hop

I was gonna say that Beyoncé is more of a mega star than jay z but left it out

the playing field is evening out

with social media and other platforms these lower tier acts/celebs/stars have the same visibility

people are gauging stardom off old gatekeeper standards

the old gatekeepers are the ones struggling for relevancy

a lot of these "opportunities" are moreso about relationships then stardom

just like the judicial system, if your lawyer doesn't have a good relationship with the judge expect to go to jail

I don't think the level that y'all are trying to put Drake/Cole/Kendrick on even exists.

Nobody in rap is shutting down American malls in 2017. Nobody is that big.

Even saying that for Em...in 2017 who is gonna chase around Eminem lol. The 2017 graduating class were sperm eggs or barely walking and talking when SSLP  came out.

Future/Cole/Kendrick/Drake could go to various places where they might get approached for a picture or autograph, and even Uzi might have people chasing him at festivals, but nobody in the rap game is causing Michael Jackson type pandemonium, people passing out and ****

so I don't understand how this argument makes Future such lower than Cole/Kendrick/Drake. Like Rico Love said on The breakfast club...the lean and perc heads who need to hear cole and kendrick's message  don't like the presentation, which is where Future comes in.

Future/Cole/Kendrick/Drake are the biggest acts today and there is no huge disparency between Future and the other three.

Snoop has aged perfectly as far as keeping your "gimmick" without looking corny.

He's lowkey had as perfect a career that you could want.

he seems pretty corny to me
seems to me non black people tend to think snoops cool
while black folks don't

yoooo i just remembered

EDIT: nvm his **** been trash anyway nobody cares

I remember on GGN or something he casually said Xzibit wrote his verse on Lay Low or ***** Please.

And that was the "prime" of his career (or at least to where he couldn't use the Puffy/Kanye/etc. excuse of being a fallen back OG).

I also wonder why that's enough to make Drake a pop star but nobody looks at Snoop the same way, at least not for that specific reason.

Not hating bc Snoop one of my favorite rappers and entertainers, but genuinely curious as to what gets certain people passes.

Drake and Kanye are definitely causing pandemonium anywhere they go

I've never heard of this.

What problem could someone have with Snoop.

In addition to the classic debut and flawless Top 10 career, he hasn't really done much tap dancing or out of character ****.
