Ask a Cop whatever.....

I have a few questions regarding policing and its differences with police departments in my country.

1. What kind of steps does your department (or other neighboring departments you are familiar with) take to improve police-community relations? Particularly dealing with different races, religions or cultures. Many of our police departments for example have "diversity training" classes for their officers, both during and after completing training. The larger police departments also usually have a "diversity commissioner" or in some cases an entire diversity department that focuses on improving community relations and training officers on dealing with diversity, racism, ...

I think such steps have brought some improvement since their implementation, though much work is still to be done of course.

So back to the original question, does your department take any similar steps to improve community relations in light of the increasing protests against police brutality across the nation? If yes, what sort of steps and do you believe they are an adequate effort to counter the problem?

2. Regarding police accountability and oversight; over here we have a federal police oversight agency whose members are appointed by the house of representatives. The Permanent Oversight On Policing Committee (or Comittee P as we call it here) functions like a branch of the justice department but its entire focus is providing external oversight on policing. Internal affairs doesn't necessarily get the last word, and it's not that uncommon for the committee to overrule internal affairs decisions or take over an investigation right from the start.

My question here is would you personally be in favor of such an external agency committed specifically to police accountability and oversight? Also, based on your interactions with fellow officers would you say most would be in favor of such an oversight system?

3. I'm sure you're familiar with "blue lives matter". Based on your interactions, how would you describe your department and coworkers' views on the current climate of police-community relations, the use of excessive force and the increasing protests around the nation against police brutality? Ranging from feeling unjustly targeted by anti-police rhetoric to feeling that the protests are justified and that things need to change, which line of thinking would you say is most dominant amongst your coworkers?

4. Why do cops lie so damn much? (reference the multiple shootings of unarmed black people)

This. This. This.

Been to court and had a buncha cops sit on the stand and tell bowl faced lies on me. What up with that?? Fabricating stories that dont make sense.

The spartan avy :x

I'm sorry but I ******* HATE police. And beyond obvious reasons I have an entire thread to back my reasoning behind my feelings. AT BEST you're misguided with good intentions. Still a spoke in the wheel of evil nonetheless. I've got some literature for you if you'd like.

do you know an older guy...first name ignacio that works in your department?

do you go through an academy before getting hired? how hard is it to get a job without going through an academy.
Took my brother about 5 years to finally land a job in oregon as a cop. So im just curious

I realized how much I enjoy helping people and how much I disliked criminals.

Horse****. you know you don't have to be a cop to help people right? Also your job is to enforce the law. You're not obligated to serve, protect or help anyone and you know that. What kind of "criminals" are you out looking for?

I've got a few questions

Why is the industry designed to keep the artist in debt?
And why them dudes ain't ridin' if they part of your set?
And why they never get it poppin' but they party to death?
Yeah, and why they gonna give you life for a murder?
Turn around, only give you eight months for a burner?
Why they selling ******' CD's for under a dime?
And if it's all love, daddy, why you come with your 9?
Why my ****** ain't get that cake?
Why is a brother up north better than Jordan
That ain't get that break?
Why you don't stack instead of trying to be fly?
Why is ratting at an all time high? Why are you even alive?
Why they kill 2Pac and Chris?

No questions from me but please destroy the blue wall of silence.

Please call out those in your union/ police department who are purposely harming black people and hold them accountable

Idk if you are a brother or not OP but I as a black man should not have to fear people who make a living from the taxes I pay every year. Im probably the cleanest person to get pulled over but I still am in fear when I get pulled me over I know that officer can take my life with impunity

And this aint even nothing new based on the rent events, this been going on for DECADES

Please be the change in your union/ police department

That is all

What do you think of civil forfeiture in some jurisdiction's? If you aren't aware of it (not trying to insult your intelligence btw), cops can seize someone's property without a warrant because they believe "it may have been involved in a crime" and the person has to jump through all types of legal hoops to get it back, making it not even worth the effort.

Read stories of Canadian tourists in northern states getting their cash taken when getting pulled over by state police and they are SOL afterwards.
I've personally never come across it. Sounds like a level up from patrol. Never heard of anybody legally being able to search someone or their car/residence without either a warrant or consent. Unless that person is a 4th waiver. It is just like it sounds. You're 4th amendment has been waived and then you're pretty much good for a search at any time and that includes your house/vehicle in some instances.

1st of all Thanks for providing a service to the community you work in and if you are a good cop, keep it up!

My question is why isn't respect a 2 way street for a lot of Police? Cops can talk to you any type of way but if you say something back its a problem even though we all grown ups

I wish it was just as much as you do, Believe me. I'm the biggest believer in giving respect to get respect. It's on an individual basis of course though and we can try to police other officers and often we do, but its up to them if they take it or not. Starting off at a level higher than it needs to be never goes well for anybody. Just makes for a lot of unnecessary work when there didn't need to be any.

I do have a question for the guys that are Anti-Police, does the Officer's complexion play a factor? Or just the position itself.

For example, OP stated he's Asian.... is he held to the same regard, if he makes a felony stop on a black person opposed to being a "White" Officer?

Legit question btw.

Nope.

Thank for answering my questions.

You mentioned your own "rules of engagement" How does it differ from the military's rules of engagement?
I was never in the military so I don't necessarily know their rules of engagement. For us its all reactionary really. If you're exhibiting passive resistance (like I say to put your hands behind your back and you do nothing) then I can put your hands behind your back for you within reason of course. If you're exhibiting active resistance (like I say to stop and you keep walking or I try to put your hands behind your back and you pull away) then I can step it up a bit and use OC spray or some kind of control hold. If you're exhibiting assaultive behavior then I have more options like baton, personal body weapons, OC spray, carotid restraint etc. Then if you have a weapon, depending on the situation, deadly force can be used.

Nope.

So you're saying race of Cop IS the x-factor, correct?
