Based on the bet-selling novel by Margaret Atwood, this series is set in Gilead, a totalitarian society in what used to be part of the United States. Gilead is ruled by a fundamentalist regime that treats women as property of the state, and is faced with environmental disasters and a plummeting birth rate. In a desperate attempt to repopulate a devastated world, the few remaining fertile women are forced into sexual servitude. One of these women, Offred, is determined to survive the terrifying world she lives in, and find the daughter that was taken from her.
show gives a whole new meaning to mandatory sex scenes

I just finished reading the book. I am definitely going to read more books by Margaret Atwood. her economy of language is very impressive and that is usually the type of fiction that I like reading.

I'll be watching the show in the next few days. The first three episodes are out now and there will be a new episode added each Wednesday.

I hope that this thread and the show gets more attention. A majority of this community are men of color and white, liberal guys so naturally we will talk about racial injustice a great deal. However, we must not forget about gender justice issues and watching THMT is a perfect way to address this topic.

i think it might be as much about race as sex

its definitely thought provoking

new ep (ep4) is out now too

The Handmaid's Tale' Scores Early Season 2 Renewal at Hulu

The MGM Television drama will return in 2018 after ranking as the streamer's most-watched premiere ever.

In announcing the renewal as part of its NewFronts presentation, the streamer noted that the Handmaid's premiere has been watched by more Hulu viewers than any other series debut — original or acquired. The drama from MGM Television, co-starring Samira Wiley and Alexis Bledel, has earned rave reviews and currently has an impressive 92 score on Metacritic.

Interesting show so far, just wish Hulu would stop already with the weekly episodes on their originals and just release the whole season. They've got other stuff to release weekly...

Episode 7 thoughts:

- I thought Lucas survived the whole time :smokin
- Why were they making so much noise while they were on the lake? LOL, I would never leave the damn cabin if I were on the run
- How did the Mexican Ambassador even know Lucas?

I just have so many questions about the Gilead:
- How large is it? The majority of the US or is just a regional thing? The epilogue of the book says that it was a short lived, regional thing but in the series it seems larger.
- What caused the infertility? Pollution and GMO foods are referred to as the causes but I don't understand how the world's fertility would drop to zero because of it.
- Why treat the handmaids like crap? They should be the ones treated the best. They're the only ones actually producing babies. Why stress them out, lock them in their rooms, etc? seems counter productive .

i think its the whole us is gilead, they said early in the revolution they were in 30 states as the sons of jacob or something

the ambassadors assistant and lucas were college roommates i think they said

i think they said it was a virus that caused the infertility, probably man made

as for why they trat the handmaids like crap, i guess its to keep control and just maintain a rigid society based on fear

In the show, Gilead seems to everywhere but Alaska and Hawai'i. In book, it seems like they have every thing East of the Rockies but their hold on Florida, Texas, Appalachia and the Gulf States seems weak.

The infertility seems like mix of disease pollution and radiation.

Power thrives on divide and conquer strategies. The wives get a measure of dignity and a great deal of comfort. Handmaid's are spared menial labor. Martha's get a longer career than Handmaid's or Jezebels and all these women can be happy to not be Unwomen. There is also the fact that all oppressive systems involve the collective consent of its elite women and in order to support the Gileadian system, the wives of the elite want to know that they will be at the top of the female hierarchy due to their permanent proximity to male power and not on the basis of fertility.

what is that proximity based on i wonder?

are all the wives just the women who initially supported?

considering intelligence seems like a strike against women in this society, the commanders dont seem like they would like an intelligent wife

it cant be based on subjective beauty because they have jezebels

the wives dont seem to raise the children, it seem like they leave that to the aunts and marthas

so what exactly is their importance to attain that proximity other than blind loyaltly to the system?

I haven't watched episode 10 yet but Hulu need to stop it with these weekly releases, just drop the whole season....but yeah so far great season.

Season Finale thoughts:

- Great season, loved that the first season ended exactly where the book did
- The fact that there is that one black commander who never talks is hilarious  (he's at the tribunal for Warren Putnam and he's been in a few other scenes). They have a totalitarian religious theocracy where they ritualistically rape women...but at least they're not racist.
- What is Serena Joy's angle here? Why even threaten June with hurting Hannah? She can't kill/hurt Hannah, a young child is far more important to the Gilead than a barren wife.
- I think Nick must be investigating something big for the Eye. He could have turned in Mr. Waterford a dozen times by now...or maybe he's part of Mayday
- I don't get the letters. Are they trying to smuggle them into Canada?
- Who are the winners in this society? It seems like it sucks for everyone except for the commanders. You're forced to have awful, joyless sex, women can't read, even the commander's wives lives are garbage, constant surveillance, etc.
- Are there any true believers in the world? It seems like everyone knows that the entire society is a façade but they play along anyway. It seems like Aunt Lydia is the only person who really buys into this and believes in it 100%.

Glad I found the thread for this, thought I was seeing things

Reminds me of The Leftovers how season 1 ended where the book did, should be a great ride!
