My job is relocating me to NYC in August. I look forward to moving to NYC but don't look forward to spending an arm and a leg for rent. Where can I find affordable rent in NYC or the NYC retro area? My budget is $1000-$1650 a month for rent.. I could spend more but I prefer not to go over $1600 a month. I also want something where I can park a car without having to worry about looking for parking or having to constantly move my car. Any suggestions from my NY nters?

Queens.

Staten Island is technically a borough but unless you're working there, rule it out as an option. Bronx is probably where you can find the cheapest apartment of the other 4 boroughs, but in terms of things to do/overall environment IMO it's Brooklyn, then Queens, then BX (most of Manhattan is ruled out at that price range but you can find something in Harlem at the top of your budget).

Are there apartments way out of your listed price range in BK, in queens? Absolutely, but you can also definitely find a 1 bed for that price, and DEFINITELY a studio. Depends on the neighborhood, where you're looking online and how lucky you get.

Alternate side of the street parking rules means you gonna be moving your car regularly whether you like it or not, how easy it is to find parking depends on the neighborhood you choose. I'd suggest looking at Crown Heights in BK, maybe Flushing or Sunnyside in Queens - Queens heads correct me if I'm wrong and parking is hard to come by there. You can find a 1 bed for 14-15 in Flatbush in BK relatively quickly but parking is a PITA.

he might be able to go to da outer rings of da heights towards dyckman...

best case scenario is university ave, right across da bridge to da bx.
By the Dallas BBQ? Living directly next to a highway wouldn't be annoying for sleeping purposes?

When I was living in Jamaica, the alternate side parking days were cutthroat. Other than that, parking was a breeze.

Thanks. My job is in Brooklyn so I'll look at Brooklyn. Are you familiar with Sheaphshead bay? My homie told me you can find affordable housing there.

Do I have to worry about getting shot in that area?

Look at Marine park and Mill Basin. Very close to Sheepshead bay and no alternate side parking rules. You can probably find something for $1000 a month.

university ave is BX3 area...what you're talking bout is Fordham road territory.

only time u gotta worry about hammers is da south Bronx & East NY Brooklyn, and Brownsville, and da islands of NYCHA housing around da city.

do yourself a favor and read da NY post daily blotter.. that's let you know where da random act of violence (that doesn't go viral) usually happens.

Honestly if you insist on living in bk or qns and don't have a parking garage or driveway, your cars gonna end up getting dented from someone else backing in, side swiped or just some random #%^* happening.

This. It's gonna happen, it's inevitable.

Also, Sheepshead Bay is basically the boonies but if you're working IN bk depending on what part, the commute might not be bad. Still won't be a centralized part of Bk though, like near Prospect Park or downtown, or the Stuy/Crown Heights. Rent will be a bit cheaper in Sheepshead than most of the rest of the borough though.

i go to all them areas and ain't worried about all that

I've lived in NY, Jersey City, and Newark before so I'm not worried about getting robbed. I'm trying to avoid apartments with mice and roaches.

You're bound to see them. Sorry. Some places will be more frequent than others, but I think that's inevitable.

With that range..take manhattan and BK off ur list

Look around Central Park west you will find what you are looking for....

.... but for real you are asking for to much. Deep in the Bronx and deep in queens may be suitable for you. I say stay away from the Bronx.
