i'm going down to salvador, brazil at the end of august for a study abroad kind of thing with 10-15 other university students. being a photo enthusiast ireally want to bring my big dSLR camera and not resort to tiny handhelds, but the prevalent crime rate there has me wondering if i should really bring it.i'll be keeping it in an innocuous camera bag most of the time, slung around my shoulder and zipper kept in sight at all times. i'll be dressing normaland not flashy or anything to fit in as much as possible; however, being asian, it's a bit harder to hide from thieves preying on tourists (i'll bewearing a low baseball cap + sunglasses though to keep my race hidden as much as possible

).

so yea, just wondering if anyone has any experiences they could relay to me? anything would be appreciated, thanks

edit: if anyone can compare crime rates to any other places in the US, canada, europe, or asia, it'd be greatly appreciated, maybe that way i can relatesome other experiences with those. thanks!

I'm willing to bet they can spot a foreigner a mile away. That being said they'll snatch your baseball cap and sunglasses too. I'd suggest wearinga fishnet wifebeater, ripped jean shorts, and thong sandals.

You say your asian but what exactly are you? Because theres a ton of Japanese in Brazil. And theres quite a few chinese as well. So you're notgonna stick out like a sore thumb either. I was born there and I visit fairly often. But I honestly wouldn't take that nice of a camera. Even if its in acamera bag thats strapped onto you really tight. Even if you "try" to fit in, you'll still be noticable as a tourist. (Baseball cap isn'thelping one bit, not many people wear them). Just because its not easy to snatch and run doesn't mean you won't get a gun pulled out on you for it. Ipersonally have never been robbed or anything but my family who lives there has multiple times. Its just a fact of life there.

I don't know much about Salvador specifically but will you be going to very touristy places? Because I know in Rio if you're at the statue of Christ, which is FULL of tourists + armed cops, its a safer place to pull out a camera like that. But if you're going to be in inner parts of the city I'd bevery weary.

hey thanks for the information. i think we'll be sticking in a relatively safe place, on the ocean front staying in a hotel. i imagine i'd betraveling in groups of 2-3 at a time and our professor/guide told us it was pretty safe until it gets dark, that's when there are weird things like legallyrunning red lights to avoid getting carjacked, kidnappers, etc. i think rio is a lot more dangerous compared to salvador, from what little i know of it. iguess i will have to really think hard about this, i'm really torn from risks of getting jacked to the great resulting photos if i don't getjacked.

also, are you talking about the large number of chinese/japanese as tourists, or actually living there?

edit: we'll be specifically in the area of Baía de Todos os Santos, Barras beach.

ive never been there, just seen their pornos

On a serious note, I wouldn't be as worry about Brazil when it comes to crime rates. I'd be much preoccupied about El Salvador because the crime ratethere is ridiculous.

Hahahha i'm going to be in Rio also!! I'm taking my d60 but i'm not going to be staying in RIO very long. I've decided to stay in BeloHorizonte, MG and just vist RIO instead of staying in RIO

brasil has the largest number of japanese immigrants and descendants outside of japan.

peru also has a large population. there are generations of asian immigrants all throughout latin america.

You'll be fine with the camera. And since you'll be with a guide(+other students), getting into "trouble" wont be an issue. Enjoy yourself.

Tchau!

i was in salvador a year and a half ago for carnival. it's sick. i can't really give you any tips on places to go, because i was just strictlydrinking. the beaches are sick, though. the women love americans. keep your camera on the low- it can get pretty grimey. pm if you have any questions.

if you get a chance, you should also travel to rio. salvador is the spot, though.

Stringer Bell 32, you just reminded me that my secondary objective there is to get a good look at all those brazilian hotties on the beaches

is it true guys have to wear speedos, or they'll look out of place/touristy?

The Japanese population in Brazil is wild. I played the Brazilian team in baseball when I went there for a tourney, and the team was like 90% Japanese. I metdudes named Leonardo Tanaka and Paulo Suzuki and such.
